Galle Fort, situated on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka, is a testament to the island's rich history and cultural heritage. Constructed by the Portuguese in the late 16th century and later fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century, Galle Fort is a remarkable example of colonial-era architecture.
Today, Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with charming cobblestone streets, well-preserved colonial buildings, and picturesque views of the Indian Ocean. The fort's imposing ramparts, originally built to defend against invasions, now offer a stunning view point, perfect for an early morning walk, followed by breakfast at one of the restaurants, my favorite place to go is Church Street Social.
Walking through the narrow streets of Galle Fort, you feel like you are transported back in time, with historic landmarks such as the Dutch Hospital, Groote Kerk and the Galle Lighthouse. You will not be able to miss them when walking around. "Love Sri Lanka" have gathered all the places to visit in Galle Fort if you want to learn more.
Even if history isn't your cup of tea, the Fort offers a great retreat for a day out. Its lively ambiance with boutique shops, enthusiastic tourist vendors, art galleries (do not miss Lanka Living Gallery), cozy cafes and restaurants, creates an incredible charm. Our family has always enjoyed our time at the Fort, it's a nice escape and change of scenery for a day's adventure.
