NOTES FROM FARMER SHANE

Starting Seeds Indoors

To get a jump-start on the growing season, we start seeds for our summer crops in the sunroom of my house under controlled conditions. We use LED grow lights, humidity domes, and a heat mat to give seedlings everything they need for a vigorous start. The lights are set to be on for 16 hours per day, and the heat mat is set to keep the soil temperature at 75 degrees - day and night. All seedlings would benefit from controlling the environment this way, but we only dedicate the resources for our high-value fruiting crops; mostly tomatoes and peppers. Both are very sensitive to soil temperature, and some of our tomato seeds will only germinate with at least 13 hours of light per day. The added heat and light allow us to start summer crops several months earlier than we otherwise could.

Last weekend, volunteers transplanted two rows of beefsteak tomato plants into the high tunnel that were seeded in mid-December and started indoors. These plants get an extra fleece row cover at night to make sure they don’t freeze in our unheated tunnel. They look great so far, so if all continues to go well, we’ll be harvesting tomatoes soon.

TENANT FARMER SPOTLIGHT

Our Global Family Garden, by Teresa Lees

At Our Global Family Farm, we’re promoting global unity and permaculture design principles by growing food crops from the four corners of the globe. The food grown at Our Global Family Farm is freely shared with local families in need of fresh produce, including ourselves. It is an all-volunteer run farm. Volunteers are welcome to come on Sundays, 9am to 1pm to nurture the land together and to hang out. We also conduct community workshops about herbal remedies and cultural uses of plants from around the globe. We acknowledge that we are on Chumash land and that we are allies in taking good care of the land and people. As our tagline suggests, "We are all part of one family on planet earth."
