Solid as the Foundation

Building is something we have become familiar with over the years as we’ve worked various projects. We’ve seen churches, schools and feeding centers built. While every building was different, they all had one thing in common: the buildings were only as solid as their foundation.

By God’s grace, we have been able to purchase a house here in Burundi for ourselves. We had a small property in Florida and with the proceeds from its sale and help from many of you, we will hopefully move into our own home in the coming weeks. When we began the process of refurbishing our house, we thought it would be simple. We quickly found out that it wasn’t going to be simple. Walls toppled under the slightest touch of the hammer. The further we proceeded in the process, the more we found wrong with the house. We had to knock everything down and start over once again with the foundation. It’s been a journey but soon we will be secure in a home whose walls won’t fall come the next rainy season.

If we want to see God’s Kingdom built, we have to start from the ground up. We can’t hope to build when we don’t invest in the dirty work of digging the trenches where the foundation will be laid.  Once the foundation is solid, we can safely build.

Our class size is limited to the size of our refurbished shipping container. The property in Blantyre is large enough to not only house the main church building but also a primary and secondary school.

School Days

January and February have already had us bolting out the gate with activity. As we reported last month, we have purchased a property next to our Hope Center feeding site in Burundi where we will open a school in September. In the meanwhile, we have finally opened our primary school in Blantyre, Malawi. We have been working for a long time to see that school open. So far, we have 10 students attending class in a refurbished shipping container. We hope to add a classroom each year to accommodate growth.

Coming Up

  • In March, we will be hosting our friends Drs. Mark and Sue Protheroe from Threshold church in the UK. They will be teaching community health at the Hope Center in Gatumba as well as in Gitega (the new capital of Burundi). Pray all arrangements go smoothly!
  • In April, we will be hosting a Pastors’ seminar with 500 in attendance. We are currently requesting permission as current laws prohibit meetings to take place during work hours in Bujumbura. Pray for swift approval!

Thank you never seems to be enough when we come to close our newsletters. We are truly grateful for your partnership and prayers.
