Everyone Has Their Own Time Zone

Professor Fang Shu

This week is the final exam week. I am pretty sure that some students are happy with their total grades, while some others are not.

To be honest with you, I hold a controversial opinion on grades. I always tell my students that grades may not be a perfect measure of academic performance. Excellent grades only prove you are good at doing school, during a certain period of time. Some attributes (e.g. creativity, flexibility, risk-taking) that make for effective functioning in the real world are actually the opposite of those required for success in school.

Don't get me wrong. I love and respect students who demonstrate academic excellence! But I also treat others exactly the same. In fact, many of those who didn't do well in my class get along with me very well. Some even offer me a discount at the hotels, resorts, and restaurants they are working for. How come? Because they know that I never give them up, and I see them shine their light on the world.

If you didn't receive an A, fine! If you only earned a C, don’t be sad! When your grades are not excellent, do not think that you are not intelligent. Don't give up!

Everyone is running their own race in their own time zone. As long as you work hard, you will find the hard work pays off eventually.
