BE MINDFUL OF STRESS AND IT'S EFFECTS ON THE BODY

There is a lot happening and honestly, that statement does not do our current social climate justice. At this time stress can creep up on you, which is a big no no!

ANXIETY

For years I have suffered with anxiety attacks, but over time I have used simple tools, just like the ones I want to share with you, to significantly reduce and shorten any anxiety fueled episodes.

The dangers of anxiety and stress are silent and for me I know oh to well how ignoring any signs can lead to a very scary situation. I remember back in 2017, it was a normal Friday. I took my daughter to the park, cooked, did some writing, I mean it truly was a normal day. However, just after bedtime things got a little abnormal.

MY ANXIETY STORY

I went to bed in the early morning hours between 1 a.m and 2 a.m. Within an hour of me drifting off to sleep, I was startled out of bed, dripping with sweat, temporarily blinded and completely disoriented and unbalanced. Immediately my son called the 9-1-1. I remember being thinking am I going to die? Yes, I was terrified as I said it was a normal day, and nothing like this has ever happened to me before. Eventually after many tests, I had a diagnosis. I suffered a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) also commonly known as a mini stroke. My following thought process was how could I not know that something was wrong?

The months to follow would be filled with doctors and tests, which to this day are still a part of my life, as they try to understand the underlying cause. As they tested I thought, and tried to recall any signs that I may have had, then it hit me - I was tired a little more than usual in the days prior; I was having very restless nights with minimal sleep; I was working on building my creative brand and the one I missed all together, there were little panic attacks and heartburn to which I was a little too dismissive. All of these markers were signs of stress or contributed to the accumulation of stress and I did not pay attention.

PERSONAL GO-TOs ON MANAGING MY ANXIETY

Since that episode, I fortunately, have not had any more close calls. I also, am very mindful of listening to my body and putting in the work daily to keep my stress levels under control.

Such as:

  • Let the first words from your lips be 'Thank You' - A little gratitude at the beginning of your day can set you on course for a day filled with appreciation.

  • Be mindful of what and how much you filter, into your thought process during the day. - We are surrounded by a constant influx of information, and where being informed is and should be your aim, it is not advisable to fixate on and feed your mind with every piece of information shared.

  • Find a pause-able moment during your day. - Our days get hectic and with most of us juggling a multitude of task, we often forget to take a step back and get quiet for a moment.

Right now, more than ever coping and calming mechanisms are necessary as Stress can have loads of unwanted effects on our bodies and mind. Pay attention to your body, and take time out to breath, pause and be grateful.
