Presidents Message, January 2020 When I moved to Montana I was reluctant! I was used to living in a populated area with my friends and family, and I was very apprehensive of moving to a place that was two hours away from the nearest Target. I was the only SLP at work, and I felt overwhelmed and alone. After struggling for a year and a half, I knew I needed to work with other SLPs. I know myself; I am a better therapist if I am around other SLPs who I can bounce ideas off of and problem solve. I made a challenging decision to switch from the medical setting to the educational setting, and I would make that decision again a hundred times over. I found my people. Through MSHA, I had the opportunity to attend the Council of State Association Presidents last May and Kiki L’Italien’s presentation “The Power of Community: Tribes and Trust”. Her talk made so much sense! She encouraged us to create a community with MSHA members. This was what I was searching for four years ago-- “people like me.” She went on discussing the 5 elements of a Powerful Community. People. Shared Experience. Shared Purpose. Resources. Trust. It seems so intuitive. - How can we build up our community of MSHA members? MSHA provides us with the automatic community of fellow SLPs and AUDs. We are your people!
- Have you tried to meet up with your Regional Rep or have meet ups with other SLPs or AUDs in your community? Did you enjoy the wine and cheese and conversations at Convention?
- What is your opinion on changes to legislation, reimbursement, SLPAs, Patient-Driven Payment Model in Montana? MSHA’s vision is to ensure Montanans will access speech, language, and hearing services from the highest trained professionals.
- Have you attended MSHA Fall Convention or the free Webinars available to members? Have you seen the updated website www.mshaonline.org? The resources and connections you make with fellow SLPs and AUDs is invaluable.
Finally, Trust. This is the cherry on top. “You always remember, support, and protect who or what helps you belong”--Kiki L’Italien. MSHA wants you to trust us! It is not something that comes easily for some, but I hope as 2020 President I will be consistent, intentional, and create more opportunity for interaction. Come join our community! We had two excellent scholarship recipients this year. The first one will be awarded to Kelly Sandford, a first year graduate student from Missoula, MT. Ms. Sandford worked at Franklin Elementary in Missoula as a Special Education teacher while she was taking her leveling classes through the University so she comes to the profession with a great deal of knowledge. She is a MSHA member and will likely continue to be involved in MSHA after she graduates. |

Our second recipient is Haley McMahon, a second-year graduate student. Haley also applied last year and received very high marks. We are so pleased she applied again. Haley recently had an externship in Kalispell which impressed upon her how much we need SLPs all over the state so those in rural communities can receive the care they need. Congratulations to Kelly and Haley! |

ASHA Corner EBP Corner Q4 We at the National Center for Evidence-based Practice strive to make implementing evidence-based practice (EBP) as easy as possible for busy practicing clinicians. Although we have all studied research methods and/or statistics in grad school, many of us have stored that knowledge away into the category of “things I used to know before I took the Praxis.” To help dust off this valuable information and give you a refresher, ASHA has developed a series of resources on topics related to: - online evidence searches,
- research design,
- bias, appraisal tools and levels of evidence, and
- statistics.
Additionally, ASHA has updated its web pages to help guide you through the entire EBP process from start to finish. Even though we know we need to implement EBP, many of us don’t know where to start. Sometimes we turn to social media groups, Google searches, or even outdated notes from graduate school (guilty!). There is so much information that it makes it even harder to find recent, high-quality research that’s applicable to your clients. It doesn’t help that so many products and professional development courses use EBP as the “buzzword” for legitimacy. While some people use EBP as an adjective (“EBP approaches for language”), EBP is more nuanced than yes-or-no, in-or-out criteria. In fact, EBP refers to the entire dynamic, ongoing, process of defining a clinical question, gathering evidence, assessing that evidence and incorporating it all into a clinical decision. With this process you consider external scientific evidence, clinical expertise, client perspective, and the internal data that you gather on a patient or client. You can use this process to make clinical decisions on any clinical question you come across and can feel confident that you are truly implementing EBP to achieve the best outcomes for your patients/clients without wasting time on interventions that don't work. Understand the process and give it a test run with your own clinical question at https://www.asha.org/Research/EBP/. Rebecca Bowen M.A., CCC-SLP is a clinical research associate at ASHA’s National Center for Evidence-based Practice. |
