Passing the CASTA Torch Signing Off as Colorado ASTA President Alison Mayes 1/10/2020 Colorado ASTA Members, It has been an honor to serve in the role as President for the past two years. I feel lucky that I was able to follow Rebecca Jonas; a pragmatic, intelligent, kind, caring, and effective leader who has done wonderful things for the health of Colorado ASTA’s membership and morale; simply by being her amazing self. Our upcoming President, Loni Obluda, will completely change the organizational scope of the various traditions and important things that we do each year: the summer camp scholarship audition process, the summer conference, and SO much more. Her impeccable talents for spreadsheets, online documents, color-coding, fonts - all incredibly useful - are bound to be wholly appreciated and undoubtedly effective. Loni has so much experience and optimism to offer. I am so excited to see where she takes us - with her big heart and sense of humor. I didn’t think that when I joined ASTA - in 2002 as a college freshman - that I would be helping to shape Colorado’s string teaching landscape today. Creating new Board positions to meet specific needs, supporting the inclusion of an ever-growing Large Group Orchestra Festival, expanding the CCAP program, and many other wonderful things that our Board and active members have been up to. Even in a state where string education is sometimes threatened and unsupported, what a great time to be a string teacher here, with ASTA continuing to advocate for and with you. You can use it as a very valuable and powerful tool. I encourage you to become familiar with the new connections being made on the National ASTA website through discussion threads and their mentor program. As our chapter moves forward into the next reign of leadership, I want to encourage you all to become more forthcoming, more outspoken, and ultimately, more involved. This association is for YOU - to better YOUR teaching, to better YOUR playing, to provide opportunities for YOUR students, YOUR school. What is it that YOU want to see? What resources do YOU want? What help or guidance can Colorado ASTA provide for YOU? Want to host a workshop? Want to serve on a committee? Want to engage in more solution-oriented thinking and problem solving? Please tell us. Thank you for the wonderful connections, for becoming my colleagues, for supporting my own professional development, for the wonderful memories, and for working with me to make ASTA a place where we can all belong. I do plan on sticking around, to continue trying to make a difference and remain an active part of supporting all string educators in Colorado. Harmoniously and With Love Always,
Alison Reifschneider Mayes |
