This swiftly-painted river scene shows the young Seurat engaging with the mid-nineteenth tradition of open-air oil painting favoured by the Impressionists. Although Seurat admired these artists, this sketch, with its controlled criss-crossed brushwork, already shows him moving beyond their technical innovations.
