After his London home was bombed in 1940, Ivon Hitchens moved to West Sussex where he painted this view looking towards Iping church from a balcony. The opened door divides the picture vertically; on one side the sky appears dark and threatening, whereas the scene through the glass door itself is more brightly coloured, offering a contrasting mood. The vase of poppies perhaps sounds a note of remembrance given that the picture was painted at the height of the Second World War.
