Meeting

It's hard to believe that we're in the last quarter of the year, and you know what that means--Fall season! One thing we all love about fall is the amazing array of vibrant colors around us. Leaves are changing to their glorious autumn hues, while the cooler breeze is certainly a welcome change. Our new focus are the many things that present a sense of completion and feeling of accomplishment as we approach the year-end.

This month's meeting is one of the last 2 meetings this year. After last month's successful fundraiser, we're headed back to Coco's Italian Market & Cafe to sip, meet and dine with our league members. We look forward to seeing you there! Make sure you visit our website to RESERVE. We need your help in getting an accurate headcount. If something changes after a reservation is made, we appreciate a heads-up before the cut-off date so we can notify our caterer.

Please read our CANCELLATION POLICY on the website for details.

Speaker

JENNY HANNON

Join us on our October meeting to hear Jenny Hannon talk about her work in making Nashville a vibrant place to live and work.

Jenny is President, Friends of Warner Parks, and her presentation title is: “Connecting Hearts and Building Communities – from the Predators to Parks.”

Outreach

Giving has always been a big part of the league's mission. See a need, fill a need! That's what we do. This month, there are 3 causes that need our help. Please consider donating to support our outreach efforts.

Christmas Gifts for Retired Sisters

Every year we ask the local retired sisters what they would like for Christmas and we work to make their wishes come true.

This year, the Dominican Sisters are requesting a new blood pressure machine that costs $500. This will be used by the nuns living in the Infirmary of the Dominican Motherhouse.

The Sisters of Mercy asked for the following:

  • Postage stamps
  • Sets of blank note cards
  • Thank you cards
  • Gift cards to Michaels, Joann Fabric or Hobby Lobby (they have knitters and crafters)
  • Towel sets
  • Chocolates

If you would like to contribute, please bring your donations to our upcoming monthly meetings in October and November.

You may also mail a check to help pay for all of the requested items. Please make your check out to NCBWL, specifying “Christmas Gifts” in the memo, and mail to PO Box 50994, Nashville TN 37205.

Afghan Refugees: How to Support

Over the course of the next six months, Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Nashville will help resettle 150 Afghans into local communities as part of the effort to help them escape Taliban rule.

“We serve people because we can address their needs, and addressing the humanitarian needs of refugees has been part of the mission of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Nashville since its founding in the early 1960s,” said Rich Musacchio, diocesan director of communications.

Amy Fabian, refugee resources specialist for Catholic Charities, will be joining us at our October meeting. She will speak briefly about the resettling of Afghani families and has asked us to consider donating to support their efforts.

Items needed:

  • Towels

  • Full & Twin blankets and sheet sets

  • Pots & pan sets

  • Dishwasher detergent

  • Shampoo and conditioner

  • Trash bags

  • Bathroom trash cans

  • bathroom and kitchen cleaner

  • Shower curtain, liner, and hooks

There will be a table set up at the October meeting to collect these items for Catholic Charities.

70th Anniversary Cancelled,

Replaced by Christmas Party

BY LYNNE WARNE

The day before our Pearls of Wisdom fundraiser event took place, the Diocese of Nashville issued a press release stating that two of its signature gatherings were being cancelled or postponed due to the pandemic: the annual ACE (Advancement of Catholic Education) Awards and Holy Fire Nashville events.

Although we had a successful fundraising event on Sept. 11, the 70th Anniversary Planning Committee met soon after and decided that we shouldn’t push our luck — especially around the holidays.

President's Message

LYNNE WARNE

Fall is my favorite season! I love the turning of the leaves and cooler weather. It reminds me of my time growing up on a farm in rural Minnesota, where my dad was harvesting crops at this time of year.

Robert Lewis Stevenson once said, “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.”

The NCBWL planted a whole lot of seeds this year when working on the 2021 Pearls of Wisdom fundraiser. The small but mighty team of volunteers who worked on this event were like farmers who, through faith and through daily effort, prayed the harvest (of a $40,000 fundraising goal) would come to fruition.
