Two years ago, the total known population of migrating western monarch butterflies plummeted to a scant 20,500 insects; a 99.4% loss in the last 20 years.
Even more shocking is that this year’s counts continued the downward spiral to fewer than 2,000 monarchs! Over 99.9% gone. What is happening?
Just as importantly, is the demise of this iconic insect the harbinger for what is happening to all of our pollinators? How important is Southern Oregon in all this? We will discuss the dire plight of the monarch and similar observations about other pollinators. We will also highlight what you can do on your land to help restore monarch butterfly habitat and help many other pollinators throughout the season.

Robert Coffan is co-founder of Southern Oregon Monarch Advocates and Chair of Western Monarch Advocates. He is a former Adjunct Professor of Hydrogeology at SOU.
Kristina Lefever joined Pollinator Project Rogue Valley (PPRV) in 2014 with a goal of making Ashland a Bee City USA. Kristina is now Chair of Bee City USA Ashland, President of PPRV, and a board member of Beyond Toxics.
