Editorial

Hello Friends

For a variety of reasons the timing is really off for The Sweet Potato this month. Normally we put this out on the second and fourth Sunday of every month, but this edition comes out today (Thursday!) and the next edition will come out on Monday, Sept 20 (third Monday.)

One major reason for the change in timing is that CONline 3 is in two weeks! The third of these crazy, fully online UU young adult conferences is going to be a two day affair! Friday night there will be a worship, small groups, and then fun times with games and more! On Saturday we will do workshops, a talent show, and identity based caucus groups. It’s free and I hope to see everyone who gets this newsletter there, as it will be the last CONline until 2021.

Bests,
Joe Chapot
Editor of The Sweet Potato
Young Adult Coordinator and Ministerial Assistant

Gathered Here

Monday, September 14

8:00pm ET/ 5:00pm PT

Here is a monthly online check-in for Canadian Unitarian Universalist young adults.Join other UU 18-35-year-olds on Zoom (a video-conferencing platform) for sharing of joys and sorrows, deeper check-ins, prayerful reflections, and an opportunity to process the events of our lives with a spiritually grounded community. Each month we are joined by a member of the Young Adult Pastoral Care Team.

The global pandemic has made this virtual gathering place more valuable than ever. While so much in our lives is unknown and unknowable, we can find comfort in familiar rituals and faces. By sharing our joys, our concerns, our sorrows, and our gratitudes, we know ourselves to be held in a loving community. Exploring the themes and spiritual practices helps us each remember our own creativity and resilience. We are all in this together, a part of a larger story. These are drop-in style gatherings, so you don’t need to sign up in advance and there is no fee.

On the days you want to attend, just settle into a comfortable spot with your computer or smartphone, sign in to Zoom at the scheduled time, and bring your whole self for the hour and a quarter. (You will need to "register" through Zoom using your email address to access the link)

The full schedule, including Zoom links, for the 2020-21 programming year can be found on our website. We will break in May for CUC National Conferences and in July/August for the summer. Check the Facebook event for the most recent themes and outlines of upcoming calls. You can also sign up to receive a reminder via text message the day of each Gathered Here by texting @cucya to (502) 694-1142. Questions can be directed to Casey Stainsby at casey@cuc.ca.

Worship Gathering with Sanctuary Boston

Wednesday, September 16

6:30pm ET/ 3:30pm PT

with Rev. Sara Dendy-Green

The Sanctuary Boston is a progressive spiritual community striving for vibrant worship and real connection. Our worship gatherings are full of music of different styles, lead by our Sanctuary Boston band. Most gatherings also include a short message shared by a community member, as well as time for ritual and reflection.

Finding Our Way Back Home: So often it's not clear what home is or if it's a thing we can find our way back to. But for many of us it's worth forging a place out of the complicated bits of our lives where we can rest, take off our actual and metaphorical shoes, touch roots amidst the restlessness, and belong.

Sept 16: "Restless and Rooted," with Alex Fam

Sept 30: "Home Again," a vespers service of singing and silence, readings and reflection.

Oct 7: "Home can be Saturday Pancakes," with Rev. Elizabeth Nguyen.

Alex is a musician, artist, speech-language pathologist, and Sanctuary community member who can often be found hugging or singing about trees.

Elizabeth is a community minister and cooker of food and prayer of prayers. She is the immigration bond coordinator at the National Bail Fund Network.

Of Things Beautiful... BLUU 3rd Sunday Worship

Sunday, September 20
4:00pm ET/ 1:00 pm PT

Register to Attend

This is a time to settle back into things as they were and as they can become. Recognition of our shared faith coming from many different sources is often symbolized by the water communion celebrated in many congregations during this season. But these are not typical times. The old ways are being reckoned with and challenged and new ways forward are being forged – all around us and inside of us. For all the reasons there may be to be fearful, concerned, uncertain and unsteady, there are at least as many reasons to be hope-filled, anticipatory, love-aligned, ready. Let's be ready together.

Join us for BLUU Online Worship! All of BLUU's online worship services are Black Sacred Space in their entirety - by and for Black people, with the words and voices of Black folks across the diaspora - and we hope that Black UUs and Black UU-adjacent folks (who share our values) from far and wide will join us!For our non-Black siblings in faith, please DO share this invitation with Black folks in your life and community.

Getting the word out about BLUU’s gatherings and other programming is one powerful way of lending your support, and we deeply appreciate it! For all of our services, feel free to come into our BLUU Zoom Room as early as 15 minutes before the start of the service to get settled, say hello to the folks who are already gathering, and listen to the music softly playing as we all prepare for our time together.

We’ve done it twice, and who doesn’t like a trilogy, so join us for CONline 3! Once again we will continue the experimental nature of CONline by expanding the event to two days! We are going to have several identity groups at CONline 3 that we hope will become the starting point for more regular meetings. We know many people have more than one marginalized identity, but will only be able to attend one group at CONline 3. If you are willing and comfortable, please indicate which communities you are part of, and the coordinators for these groups will follow up with you after CONline 3 to connect you to them.

It will take many people to make CONline 3 happen, and we know a lot of you want to help.

If you want to staff CONline 3 please indicate so on your registration form.

UUYAM Professionals Call

Tuesday, October 13

5:00pm ET / 2:00pm PT

If you work for a Unitarian Universalist organization and are responsible for a young adult ministry, then you are invited to connect with your peers on our monthly support call! This call is for professionals, those who are employed by UU organizations, be they congregations, regional groups, national bodies, or some other kind of entity. We spend the hour sharing about our programs, working on challenges, stepping back to take in the big picture, and laugh at the incongruous things we encounter while trying to create young adult ministry.

If you want to attend, please email uuyami@uusf.org with your name, where you work, your job title, and what young adult, emerging adult, campus ministry program you are responsible for.

If you are a UU young adult who leads in any capacity within the movement, then please attend our UUYA leaders call, usually on the first Sunday of the month.
