RICI Newsletter - Sep 2024

What We’re Up To

Kia ora, dear friends and whanau!

We've had a busy few months with Covid doing its rounds again, and its now time for our Spring catch up. A lot of public noise has been building up in the background regarding the funding cuts that are affecting the health, disability, social and education sectors. These cuts do not bode well for charities, or for families who are already facing challenges. For those interested, here is a link to a very strongly worded letter addressed to MP Louise Upston, sent by Peter Reynolds, Chief Executive Officer, Kia Tu Tahi Tatou NZDSN.

Letter from the New Zealand Disability Support Network to Minister for Disability Issues Louise Upston

But while we are following these discussions closely online, and advocating where ever possible, we also want to focus on all the positive things that are happening in our region.

Our AGM is coming up this month (see post below), and the usual rules apply. As an Incorporated Society:

  • We need a miminum of 10 paid up members, and a committee of 5

  • Paid up members have voting rights at the AGM (Membership is $10 p.a).

  • Any interested person may attend but we need RSVPs by Friday 27th Sep

  • AGM documents will be emailed to all members, prior to the meeting

  • Forms for nominations of Committee members to be emailed to the Secretary,

    latest, 24hrs before the meeting.

The main Agenda item at the AGM will be the discussion related to the new Act for Incorporated Societies that requires all existing societies to re-register. This is an opportunity for societies to reassess their constitution and structure. The RICI committee will present our recommendations to members, at the AGM.

Please get in touch with us if have any questions about the AGM; if you would like to join up as a member and attend, or if you would like to nominate a committee member. It would be great to hear from you!

Ngā mihi,

Mahurangi People First

People First NZ is trialling self advocacy meetings in Warkworth for a few months to see if there is local interest. Last month a small group got together for a workshop on what the Enabling Good Lives approach is all about. This month we had another mini workshop on scams - what they are, and how to avoid them.

People First is for learning disabled adults, 18 plus, who want to be supported to learn the skills of self advocacy, to be able to speak up about the issues in their own lives and community.

We would really love more people to take this opportunity to attend. So if you know anyone who might be interested in joining us, please get them to contact me!! Thank for your assistance in spreading the word.

Ngā mihi

  • We are gathering disabled people who want to fight for their rights in as many cities and towns as possible.

  • Local committees are being set up to meet regularly in person.

  • As they become stronger, protests, pickets, and public meetings can be held.

Able2Worship - Warkworth

This is a non-denominational, informal service and all are very welcome, especially those with learning and/or physical disabilities or challenges. Meetings are held bi-monthly at the Methodist Church hall, at 1 Hexham Street, Warkworth (bottom of the hill).

The theme for the September meeting was "make a joyful noise!", and that's exactly what everyone did!! There was a lot of singing of favourite songs, dancing in the aisles, and an incredible drumming and foot-stamping session led by Rosemarie that really cheered everyone up. The evening ended with a lovely shared dinner - a great opportunity for more fun and fellowship.

Last 2024 meeting: Dec 8th (Christmas theme). Sunday at 4 - 6pm, dinner is included. For more info, contact RICI.

Regular Warkworth Social Groups

PHAB Warkworth

PHAB is a fun Wednesday evening social club for young adults with mixed-abilities. 6 - 8pm, at Shoesmith Hall, Warkworth - with outings on alternate weeks. The programme runs during school terms with a 2 week break over the school holidays.

Club members plan their own fun activities - eg. movie nights, crafts, baking, tenpin bowling, games nights, discos, restuarant visits, etc. And now, thanks to the new Rodney Youth project, we have the use of some great comfy furniture in the hall - perfect for those movie & popcorn nights.

Rodney Youth Project

The new Rodney Youth Space for 14 -18 year olds opened last month at Shoesmith Hall in Warkworth, and is held every Friday afternoon from 3.30pm to 6pm. The aim is for the space to be somewhere teens can drop in to try new activities or just be with people their own age – this month, activities include making sushi, soup and dumplings, as well as painting, upcycling and baking.

“We plan to always have one activity available and one cooking-based activity every session, along with sports equipment, board games and free wifi for those who just want to hang out". There are plans to start a second session for 12 to 14-year-olds later this year, as well as special events in the school holidays. Follow the FB page for more info!
