This song came up this past week in my “Recents,” and though I had no memory of listening to it, the timing was magical. I had been working on letting go of a little, minor, itty bitty, just barely noticeable tendency to hide behind an almost 62 percent truth that I have it all together and "am totally fine… really, I swear!"
WHY are we so unwilling to be messy? Who benefits from the pressure of living up to some sort of perfect ideal? How much energy do we waste trying to meet societal, familial, religious, or social "norms"?
Truth: Do you know why the “norm” is so damn hard to achieve? The “norm” isn’t real. We are grossly different, unique, one-of-a-kind individuals with varying perspectives. The only “norms” are:
1- Norm Peterson sipping a beer at the end of the bar and
2 - The fact that we all have exactly 1 thing truly in common: We are all human.
Bonus Truth: The mess is where life’s secret sauce lives. Joy and Fulfillment are there in the mess just waiting to teach, heal, make us whole, and overflow into the space around us.
What messy scarred-up part of yourself are you hiding to keep up a “norm” façade?
Drop the Beautiful, and let us see those badass scars. Let us see 100% of You.
That’s who we need. That is who is driving your purpose and chomping at the bit to set you free.
"Would you let me see beneath your beautiful? Would you let me see beneath your perfect?
Take it off now, boy. Take it off now, girl... We ain't perfect. We ain't perfect."
"See Beneath Your Beautiful" ~ Labrinth
