Clan Forbes Tour 2022 Brilliantly Captured on Video by DHShields

Thanks to the generosity of member Dr. Mikal Barchenger, the Clan Forbes Tour 2022 participants were joined by gifted Content Creator DHShields. He has recorded and edited a 7:50 video summary of the tour, which is now available on his YouTube Channel. The work includes highlights from visits to Druminnor Castle, Castle Forbes, Pitsligo Castle and Kirk, Huntly Castle, Fyvie Castle, Fyvie Church (with Tiffany window memorial to Percy Forbes-Leith), Meldrum House, Craigievar Castle, Speyside Cooperage, Glenlivet Distillery, Johnsons of Elgin, Elgin Cathedral, Culloden House and Battlefield, Highland Archive Centre, Knockando Woolmill, Dowans Hotel, Corgarff Castle, and the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games.

Glaswegian Derek Shields received his honours degree in Computer Animation & Digital Art in 2011. He developed his skills as a Digital Creator by producing travel videos and blending videography, speedpaintings and animation techniques for events and festivals. Society members will know Derek as the artist behind the Society’s last publication House of Forbes for Kids. More than just a tour videographer, Derek and his partner Leesa McInnes were also engaging travel companions who provided a fresh, young perspective of modern Scottish life.

Society Supports the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games

This year, the Clan Forbes Society was an active participant in the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games, “Scotland’s friendliest games.” More than just cheering on the competitors, the Society was also a Bronze Sponsor of the event. For its financial support, the Society received advertising space in the print program, a choice location for a Society banner, and the sponsorship of the 12- to 18-year-old bagpipe competition. During the Games, the tour participants were joined in the covered stands by their Chief, Malcolm, Lord Forbes; Jinny, Lady Forbes; the Chief’s daughter-in-law the Hon. Maria Forbes; and grandchildren Geordie, Master of Forbes, and Isolda Forbes. The Society members were welcomed by Sir James Thomas Stewart Forbes of Newe, 8th Baronet. The Society presented him with a pewter quaich engraved with the Clan Forbes crest. The Society also gifted a quaich to Geordie, Master of Forbes.

House of Forbes Heritage Sites: Edinburgh

Most of the House of Forbes Heritage Sites are spread throughout Aberdeenshire. However, the city of Edinburgh is also home to many sites of interest, as well. Edinburgh Castle is notorious as the prison for both John, 6th Lord Forbes, and his son John, Master of Forbes. The son was beheaded and quartered but pardoned posthumously. Both the Scottish National Gallery (SNG) on the Mound and Scottish National Portrait Gallery (SNPG) on Queen Street offer artwork of and by Forbeses. The main museum of the National Museums Scotland holds some important artifacts such as the Monymusk Reliquary, the Fettercairn Jewel, two of William Forbes of Tolquhon’s cast bronze cannons, and the Craigievar Mazer. Parliament Hall on the Royal Mile holds a statue and portrait of Duncan Forbes of Culloden, Lord President of the Court of Sessions. The Church of St John the Evangelist was built under the leadership and with funding provided in part by the sons of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, 6th Baronet. Four of the 10 windows were sponsored by members of this family. Memorials to members of the House of Forbes are included in its graveyard, along with other sites such as Greyfriars Kirkyard, Canongate Churchyard, and the Dean Cemetery.
