Reyets Question of the Week: Which Form of Voter ID Should I Show at the Polls? |
Since November 2nd was election day, here's a relevant question one might ask when preparing for the polls! Answer: About half the states with voter ID laws accept only photo IDs. Many states offer a free voter ID card if you don't have a valid photo ID to show. Honestly, it really all depends on your state. About half of the states with voter ID laws accept only photo IDs. Many of these states now offer a free voter photo ID card if you don’t have another form of valid photo ID. Each state has a specific document request, which they will accept as proof of identification. Be sure you know your state’s voter ID requirements before Election Day so you don't miss the opportunity to exercise your rights. #vote #voterid #knowyourreyets |

Do you know one of the men behind the American Indian Movement (AIM)? |
Dennis Banks (also referred to as Nowa Cumig) was born April 12, 1937 on the Leech Lake Reservation located in northern Minnesota. Raised by his grandparents, Banks was taken at the age of 5 to attend an Indian boarding school organized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The goals of the boarding school were to "civilize" and educate Native American children in English and mainstream culture, in effect, to assimilate them. Children were prohibited to speak their native languages or practice their traditions. These experiences all contributed to Banks passion to co-found the American Indian Movement (AIM). The American Indian Movement was founded by Banks, along with Russell Means, in 1968. Their goal: to ensure and protect the civil rights of American Indians living in urban areas. At the time, American Indians were cultivating communities within urban areas. Matters of poverty, systemic discrimination, and police brutality were prevalent in these communities and directly impacted American Indians. As a result, Banks and Means organized to demand the federal government to protect the treaties and sovereignty of American Indian Nations with the U.S. Because of Banks' efforts, youth are inspired to learn about American Indian history and know their rights! Happy National Native American Heritage Month |
On November 14, 1990, President George H. W. Bush declared the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month to honor the hundreds of Native American tribes and people in the United States, including Alaska but not Hawaii. In the U.S., there are approximately 574 federally recognized tribes. However, according to the U.S. census, these tribes only make-up about 2% of the entire U.S. population (or 6.79 million). Some of those tribes include, but aren't limited to: Duwamish, Apache, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Chinook, Comanche, Hopi, Blackfoot, and Sioux. Reyets recognizes the culture, resilience, and trailblazing impact Native and Indigenous people has on our society. Thank you for your perseverance!
