Dear Friends,

I recently directed two plays at Virginia Stage Company: Hold These Truths by Jeanne Sakata and Dear Jack, Dear Louise by Ken Ludwig. Both plays are set against the backdrop of World War II, and, produced in rotating repertory, they create a solidarity partnership, illuminating the multifaceted nature of the American experience. These non-professional photos were taken from the balcony with my camera phone. They don't fully capture the colors, but hopefully you can still see the alluring work of the design team. Please find information about the artists involved below...

Hold These Truths tells the real-life story of Gordon Hirabayashi, who defied the curfew and mass incarceration order of Japanese Americans; and Dear Jack, Dear Louise tells the story of how playwright Ken Ludwig's parents met during the War. Both are love stories: Dear Jack, Dear Louise is a love story between two young people against the obstacle of war, and Hold These Truths is a love story between a man and his country against the obstacle of racism.  The two productions run through November 7, 2021. You may find more information here.
