Be Careful, She Bites

Whoa what a month! First up in exciting news, I WON the Elevated Eight Cannabis Chef Cookoff with this gorgeous Pineapple Meringue Tart, pictured above, which sparked a lightbulb inside me to lean into the world of culinary cannabis. It's something I've become very passionate about and excited to share my knowledge with all of you. We've all heard bad edible experience stories, or experienced them ourselves, but it doesn't have to be that way!

We launched BAKED With Chickens, a culinary cannabis show, to help explain the science of cannabis and show how to cook with it at home. This is not a stoner show about getting high. It's a cooking show about understanding how use the cannabis plant to feel better and incorporate it onto your life. Give it a whirl and let me know what you think!

Happy Mother's Day to all the fierce chicken/dog/cat/human mommas out there!

P.S. This isn't going to be all cannabis all the time, but I'll start to talk about it more and I hope you like it! Check out this excellent article below from Vogue about the future of artisanal edibles.

The Future of Edibles Is Artisanal

Artisanal edibles are not your parents' weed brownies, nor are they the blue raspberry-flavored gummies coated in artificial sugar to mask the taste of cannabis. Now, brands like Rose, Sundae School, and Serra are serving a variety of delicious culinary innovations in the form of Turkish delights, mochi gummies, and gum drops.

Things We Love (BAKED edition)

What we're trying and enjoying this month

Hands-down the best edible gummy in California. Rose Delights crafts delicious turkish delight candies using seasonal ingredients and single-source cannabis rosin (translation: super high quality). Flavors are paired with the cannabis strains rather than trying to hide it. We especially love their chef collab products. Latest drop is a Kiwi Oro Blanco by Chef Natasha Pickowicz.

Delightful

My favorite new kitchen gadget makes infusing cannabis easy and looks great on my kitchen counter. It even sings a pretty song when it's done. This beautifully designed LĒVO infusion machine infuses any dried herbs, not just cannabis. Make herbal infused balms, salves, honey, cream, and oils. We even wrote some recipes for their site!

Sparkling CBD drinks sweetened with Vermont honey created by beekeepers. Bimble drinks are refreshing without being overly sweet and contains 25mg CBD per drink, which means I felt very relaxed and chill. These contain ZERO THC, which means you can buy it online and have it shipped anywhere in the U.S.

Sip On This

Love this brand and their products. Farmer and the Felon is a cannabis flower line that supports and sources from pioneers of the medical marijuana movement. Their latest partnership is with WAMM (Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana) and its founder Valerie Corral, who was instrumental in passing Prop 215.

Broody Chicken Mommas

Broody Wanna-Be-Mom Snozzberry (on the left) and regular Burritoberry (on the right)

An ode to chicken moms in honor of Mother's Day! Every spring, hens get a surge or hormones and a sudden desire to become chicken mommas -- they become broody. Their tiny brains tell them to sit on eggs and hatch babies. The sweetest, nicest hen will turn into a fierce broody momma who puffs her feathers up like an angry butterball to defend her precious eggs. Be careful, she bites and will give your hand a firm warning peck and dinosaur screech to stay away.

Weirdly Wonderful Facts About Broody Hens:

  • Don't discern between fertilized or unfertilized eggs, or golf balls.
  • Rip out their own breast feathers to line the nest and transfer heat from their bodies to incubate eggs.
  • Will only leave the nest a couple times a day to eat drink and poop.
  • Broody hen poops are HUGE and extra smelly.
  • It takes 21 days to incubate a chicken egg.

  • A mother hen turns her eggs about 50 times per day.

  • An egg develops at 88 degrees Fahrenheit and is laid at 105 degrees.

We're not ready to be chicken grandparents yet even though Dude is doing the deed. Raising baby chickens is a big responsibility and Dude isn't even paying rent yet. Snozzberry and Leelaberry were the first two to go broody this season.

Take a Bite Out of These
