May the 4th be with you!! Here's what I did in April... |
I've never gardened before. It's scary to be responsible for so many little plant lives when I don't know what I'm doing AT ALL. But look at all their beautiful green leafies!! 😍 |
This year Seth and I started seeds indoors. We made this plant setup in our bathtub - complete with lights on a timer! It's actually really nice to stare at growing plants while sitting in here... We have tomatoes, coneflowers, marigolds, cabbage, LOTS of pepper plants, one onion, leeks, and lavender so far. Next step: we wait for the freeze risk to go away so we can plant them outdoors! |
PLUS, check these out. I sewed some plant pots with this video! They're a perfect alternative to getting more plastic seedling pots (and we can store them for next year easier too). The plants don't mind my messy sewing, all they need is a secure home of dirt... at least, I think they don't mind.😅 |

A to Z Animal Mysteries! It's a new series by Kaylen Wayley, illustrated by me, coming out July 4th. It's about a best friend trio solving mysteries about animals! |
Book 1 is about Alpacas, which happen to be participating in a costume contest. 😍 Pictured here are my print proofs so I can double check all the colors to make sure they print correctly. |
For this chapter book series I've developed a different style to accommodate the number of illustrations in the book (there are over 80 pages!). It's much different than my picture book work, and I'm still getting used the bold linework and more comic-like feel. What do you think? |
Sneak peek of Book 2 coming out this September - Bats in the Castle!! |
I'm currently working my way through the final illustrations for Book 3 of the series. Can you guess which animal we're solving a mystery for that starts with the letter C? |
I lived in the Northwest US for about 8 months during 2020-2021. Seth and I would hike a new route every weekend, and we didn't even begin to exhaust how many trails and waterfalls there were to see! Truly beautiful and we miss it every day. |
During our time there, I bought this book at a local shop, hoping it could help me remember how magical it felt to go on our outdoor weekend adventures. The Hike is a brilliant little book where you follow Wren, El, Hattie and their dog Bean up to the summit of a nearby hiking trail in Oregon. |
Each of them have a special job if you look closely, and the sparse text (mostly dialogue) allows you to explore each page and notice the labeled illustrations of plants and animals on the trail. |
My favorite part is Wren's sketchbook, which you periodically get to peek into throughout. The back of the book has several closeups of her sketchbook so you can see all the wonderful ways she documents the hike with her sisters! The hike concludes with a simple, fantastic ritual that you can see they planned from the beginning. 🍃 |
Next time we talk my plants will be in the ground outside, hopefully thriving. 😅 What should I do with the empty shelf in my bathtub then? See you next month! p.s. flashback to when i drank all that punch last year |
