A Kansas City artist is displaying her life's work in Overland Park this week. She hopes it brings people the same joy it's brought her over the years.
Marcia Streepy said this exhibit is very personal to her because it's her way of giving back.
"So this was a memory of a sunset," she said.
Streepy's watercolors, pastels and oil paintings are all over the world. Right now, hundreds of them fill the walls at the Interurban Arthouse in Overland Park. She said that she's never limited herself to one genre.
"I think I have such a large body of work. If somebody says, 'I want all your chicken paintings,' I would have chicken paintings for them or if they want Flint Hills paintings," she said.
Most of her paintings were done on location here in Kansas City.
"I always kept a little set of watercolors in my purse and postcard-size paper so that whenever I stopped and had a chance, I would paint," Streepy said.
You'll see that Streepy's work has changed in recent years. She was diagnosed with ALS but it never stopped her from painting.
"My disease started probably five years ago, and I couldn't move my thumb. And then, but I was still painting, and I adapted. We all change and adapt as things happen," she said.
Streepy's work is looser now, not so detailed.
She will be donating 20% of the proceeds from the exhibit to the ALS Society.
Streepy said her art is her way of giving back. She calls her exhibit "Glorious Days."
"It was like being in heaven, to be able to set up my easel and paint," she said. "It was really, I get teary thinking about how much fun it was."
The exhibit goes through June 5. Prices for Streepy's work range from $20 to $3,000.
They're all originals. No prints. Tours are available.
