Last weekend, my friend decided to learn guitar. So, we went to Sam Ash, a music store, to purchase her first acoustic guitar. When I was checking the sound quality, she said, “You made playing the guitar look so easy!”

Have you ever looked at someone doing something and thought to yourself, “Wow, what a talented person! He/She really makes it look easy! ”

Let me tell you, someone who makes something looks so easy probably has spent many years and endless hours practicing and perfecting their craft. They have made more mistakes than they can remember, and have forgotten more than the novice can even comprehend. Even after years of practicing their craft, any highly skilled person will say, "I'm still learning."

I remember when I first started learning guitar, I quickly realized that playing this musical instrument was anything but easy. I was asked to do the basic finger workout (see the picture below). I was not happy because this exercise seemed boring and I wanted to learn how to play a song. But my tutor said, "This exercise helps you develop your physical skills faster and will get you playing songs better! You wanna make it look easy later? You gotta practice every day" So, I spent at least one hour every day on this simple exercise to create muscle memories. I still practice it whenever I have time now.

All of this to say, when you start out to learn something, one of the best things you can do is to practice. You have to do it over and over again countless times. You might even get tired of it along the way. But trust me, if you take the time to practice, then one day you too can make it look easy. Apply that approach to whatever is your "thing" and you'll never stop learning, and you will continue to get better even when you don't notice it.

Sincerely yours,

Fang Shu
