Vandalism of our Mural

November 17, 2020

Dear friends and neighbors:

Our beautiful mural, honoring the life and inspiration gifted to us by Representative John Lewis has been vandalized. This was an ugly, premeditated act of hate, and there is no excusing it.

My team and I are heartbroken and angry. Our friend, the artist Rocky Cotard is heartbroken and angry. We hope that you too, share in our outrage.

The police have been notified. I will keep you updated on our response.

In the meantime, DO NOT TURN AWAY from this. LOOK AT IT HARD. This is an act of hate against all of us! It is a violation of all that is decent, good and hopeful in our world. It is meant to cause pain. But we do not have to accept this. The more of us who share the burden of this pain in solidarity, the less power it has. What would John Lewis do? He would tell us:

“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”

And that is what I will continue to do.
