Hello, from the LANCE Trust’s small but busy team! A particular shout-out goes to contacts old and new that we chatted to at the Long Ashton Community Open Day earlier this month. It's always a pleasure to learn about what other groups and individuals are doing for wildlife in the area. Our mission, as ever, is to maintain and increase biodiversity in and around Long Ashton, here’s what’s happening… |

🙋🏽 Hedge-planting volunteers wanted this winter We're going to kick off 2024 off with a spurt of positive activity by planting 6,150 whips (hedgerow saplings). The plan is to create some species-rich hedging, interspersed with standard trees, between two chunks of semi-ancient/ancient woodland. In this way, extra wildlife corridors and habitat will be created in Long Ashton. It will be the first large-scale nature recovery project in the parish for a very long time. To succeed, we need as many volunteers as possible, ready to help from mid-February onwards, so please let us know if you've got time and energy to spare. We'll be sharing more information on the project soon. |

📒 State of Nature report The State of Nature report was released this month as a comprehensive assessment of the state of biodiversity in the UK. We've reflected on the state of nature in Long Ashton, and the status of some of our local endangered species.

🌾 Lark Meadow's had a trim Those of you with keen eyes may have noticed Lark Meadow has been cut in wide stripes so that, from a distance, it looks rather like an over-sized lawn! The reasons behind cutting a meadow in this unusual way are carefully thought out and will be revealed in a new blog soon.

🧑💻 Accounts admin wanted Are you, or someone you know, able to volunteer an hour or two a month to the Trust, to help with our accounts? We're looking for a reliable, experienced person, who's happy to lend their skills on behalf of the environment.

✂️ How to: propagate wild cuttings Autumn is the ideal time to propagate cuttings from hedgerow plants like dog rose, elderflower and hazel. We've published a step-by-step guide on our blog - we'd love to know how you get on.
