The people, products & projects I'm loving this month

Two old guys lost in a sea of influencers...

So one of the more bizarre aspects of this social-media-savvy business that we create for ourselves is that occasionally we receive attention from proper, grown-up companies, and this happened recently when I was invited – along with ~250 other 'influencers' – to attend a Creator Summit courtesy of Amazon's Influencer Program. In Berlin...

I've never been to Berlin before, and honestly can't say that I saw much of it, but the event was very much focussed on content creators in the fashion / lifestyle / beauty / grooming sectors, so it was a pleasure (and a relief!) to have the legend that is Robin Clevett alongside me for company and support. I know Robin from the WhatsApp chat group that I've mentioned before, and we were given a pass from the 'technology of skincare' discussion (beyond hope or nothing to learn? You decide!) and took the opportunity for a brief walk out, only to get caught in a hailstorm... And that was pretty much all we saw of Berlin!

Back at the event, whilst not focussed on our particular sector or age group, it was an eye-opener, and genuinely an amazing opportunity to meet and learn from – see below – so many creative young people, all very focussed and driven in their endeavours. A real privilege to be invited, and a pleasure to have taken part.

So what’s been happening in the 10MinuteWorkshop?

Shop the Travel Toolkit video... Must try harder, Triton...

Head down and grafting, mostly; I'm still on the weekly-schedule hamster-wheel of content creation, though I took a break recently as I didn't quite have a video ready to go, and I'd prefer to take a break than put something out that wasn't quite right. I've had some success with my Triton Doweller video, and there'll be a follow-up to that when I have a crack at fixing the manufacturers omissions.

One of the interesting aspects of the Amazon Berlin trip was to discover how many creators use their Instagram presence as a sales channel; I hadn't really considered it, but you can add a clickable link to an Instagram 'story' and that link can be to anything – an affiliate link to your Amazon Store, for example, or an 'idea list' or to a specific product.

I've mentioned here before about Instagram being a distraction, but having attended the event I decided to do give the platform another shot, but on my terms, just to see how it goes.

Workshop Drawer Cabinet

I finally put the workshop drawer cabinet to bed with the last set of undermount / concealed runners, which went in very well. The runners I used were recommended to my by fitted furniture guru Derek Barrett, and while they don't have the range of adjustment of the Blum Movento, they're less than half the price. I also used the same company's side-mounted ball-race runners for the middle drawers on this unit,. and they were excellent value as well.

I'll be milking this video a bit more in future too; I've already shot a 'Which Drawer Runner When?' style of video – it was one of the reasons for using various runners on each drawer – and parts of the cabinet build will feature in a 'Base Cabinetry Basics' video I have planned too, as it's one of the more regular questions on the Cabinetry Basics set of videos.

Things I’m loving (again) this month

It's been been a little while, but I used the Peanut 2 connector from Intelligent Fixings for the drawer fascias on the undermount runner video and they really are the perfect connector for this application – non-marking, and able to cope with the axial load that you get when you connect a face to an edge; other connectors can do this as well, but they mostly rely on friction and/or glue to achieve the joint, whereas the head of the Peanut 2 in the keyhole slot can resist an extraordinary load.

I featured the Peanut 2 connector and mini-jig many times, and there's a Peanut 2 playlist that features projects and reviews, if you haven't seen them before. Recommended.

And finally...

I had a lot of fun making a simple little monitor stand from coloured MDF; this came about after Plus member Pavel – thanks Pavel! – posted a drawing in the Members Projects forum as he was wondering about the best way to secure the rebated joint that was angled, to splay the legs slightly.

I thought it would be OK just glued and made a quick one using just a tracksaw as a test project – and then realised it would make a good Basic Build! So keep your eyes peeled for the monitor stand in 10MW colours coming to YouTube very soon!

That’s all for now though, so until next month, stay safe and take care.

Peter
