In this timely, provocative, and uplifting journey, the bestselling author of Walking the Bible searches for the man at the heart of the world’s three monotheistic religions—and today’s deadliest conflicts.

At a moment when the world is asking “can the religions get along?” one figure stands out as the shared ancestor of Jews, Muslims, and Christians. One man holds the key to our deepest fears—and our possible reconciliation. Abraham is that man.

Bruce Feiler set out on a personal quest to better understand our common patriarch. Traveling in war zones, climbing through caves and ancient shrines, and sitting down with the world’s leading religious minds, Feiler uncovers fascinating, little known details of the man who defines faith for half the world.

Both immediate and timeless, Abraham is a powerful, universal story, the first-ever interfaith portrait of the man God chose to be his partner. Thoughtful and inspiring, it offers a rare vision of hope that will redefine what we think about our neighbors, our future, and ourselves.

Well written and researched but this book surprisingly left me very saddened until the redeeming actions taken at the very end- actions taken as a consequence of the author’s discoveries made while making the journey to research the book. I highly recommend this book for Christians, Moslems and Jews, and even those with a casual interest in Abraham.

Bruce Feiler examines the way Abraham of the Bible; known as the "Father of All Nations", is celebrated by the three major religions of the world - Muslim, Jewish, and Christian. He expands on the life of Abraham and his family as depicted in the Bible, the Torah, and the Koran. I found his observations fascinating, beautifully expressed, and captivating.

Any book written by this author is a delight - a feast - a learning experience. Just as his book "Walking The Bible" is a classic, this one is also a spiritual pilgrimage as he seeks out and provides the reader with information you could never imagine. He describes the people past and present who lived and now live in the Holy Land - how they all view Abraham a little differently, as well as how they worship in their own way, together and yet apart, within the Holy Land.

I don't know of another person who could write about this subject matter, not offend anyone, and provide the opportunity for an open discussion between people of the three faiths. They really do have some common ground. Abraham - we never knew you! Read this book; you'll love it!

This chronicle of Bruce Feiler’s search for the true story of Abraham is well-researched and engaging. The author’s discussions with Abrahamic scholars and clergy of the three faiths are enlightening. Each of the three religions claim Abraham as their patriarch. However, their relationships with Abraham are very different.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the study of Abraham, and his relationship to each of these major religions.

This is a wonderfully objective exploration of the story of Abraham — historically, geographically, philosophically, theologically and politically—from the perspective of all three Abrahamic religions. The story does not sugar coat the profound disagreements among religious traditions. There are parts of this book that are depressing and ugly. But the author expertly challenges the dogmatic views by pointing out how they are inventions of convenience, created at times when each of the religions was suffering from an existential crisis and called on Abraham to bolster their authenticity. Ultimately, the question is whether Abraham can become a unifying force, rather than a divisive one. Can the three religions accept that they each have their own story of Abraham but, just as we have accepted that we all worship the same God, can we also accept that we also believe in the same Abraham? It is a question worth pursuing for the sake of peace.

In our current times, when some are trying to foster hate at every turn, separation, and re-build the walls that divide “us”, “them”, and “those people”, this book reminds us that while different religions have journeyed along different roads we are all trying to reach the same place, learn the same lessons, have endured similar heartbreaks and aches, suffered together and apart, enjoyed the same traveling companions, and in the end, hopefully, will all arrive on the same mountaintop having attained the same enlightenment.

The book is broken up into a well written explanation of Abraham’s significance and importance to three of the worlds major religions and though different, explains how much they have in common in Abraham. Wonderful book for individual reading or your small adult study group.

It seems present-day history often begins with the premise that civilization in this era is the most advanced of humankind’s existence.

Corollary to this are seemingly widely accepted theories and empirically evidenced phenomena of biological evolution, technological advancement, advancing civilization, and discovery of truth?

Is it possible the history of humankind is well-described as a meandering, with an element of randomness, cyclical and occasional refreshings of truth, and an un-surprising general tendency toward devolution?

Is it instead possible truth was known at the outset and, by a very human tendency toward arrogant, willful searching for complexity, contrary to the wisdom of Ocum’s razor, corrupted?

How arrogant it seems to assume this present era marks the height of evolution, advancement, and knowledge.

As much as I enjoyed Bruce Feiler’s journey and associated insights, and I did, particularly as relates to religions I am so lightly familiar with, I found myself repeatedly questioning some of his conclusions as it seems they derive from this to-me errant premise.

I read this book years ago and was thinking about it again this year, so I purchased a copy and read it again.
A thoughtful and comprehensive look at the origin of three major religions ...a great read to begin learning about what religions have in common...and what each has done to frame their narrative.

Bruce Feiler blends the academic with the common as he attempts to explain the three religions of the Middle East. Explaining the basic tenets of Islam, Judaism and Christianity as based on Abraham as the father of all three, Feiler takes us on a journey through the times of history as each religion is birthed.

Bruce Feiler is a great writer. This is one of three books for the series. Feiler writes both the practical - the travel log and also the spiritual- his journey of faith. Bruce Feiler is a compelling writer who brings key information to a deeper understanding of his travels. I have learned a great deal from his three books.
As a student of theology, this is also a worth while time spent reading this texts.

There are great theological books about Abraham in the three religions - for example Prof. Kuschel "Streit um Abraham". But Feiler's book is more than theology! He's telling us a story, his story -as an american jew after september 11, which he experienced in New York- in discovering Abraham, in exploring the bible, speaking with jewish, christian, muslim sages, travelling the abrahamic-biblical places even in times of war.
I read it in a single rush - and think you will probably do the same. If you like good storytelling and believe in the possibility of peace - just read it! And if you don't - well, then read it nevertheless, chances are good that Feiler would convince you! I volunteer to translate it into German for free! (-:
