Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths Paperback – August 2, 2005
Purchase options and add-ons
In this timely, provocative, and uplifting journey, the bestselling author of Walking the Bible searches for the man at the heart of the world’s three monotheistic religions—and today’s deadliest conflicts.
At a moment when the world is asking “can the religions get along?” one figure stands out as the shared ancestor of Jews, Muslims, and Christians. One man holds the key to our deepest fears—and our possible reconciliation. Abraham is that man.
Bruce Feiler set out on a personal quest to better understand our common patriarch. Traveling in war zones, climbing through caves and ancient shrines, and sitting down with the world’s leading religious minds, Feiler uncovers fascinating, little known details of the man who defines faith for half the world.
Both immediate and timeless, Abraham is a powerful, universal story, the first-ever interfaith portrait of the man God chose to be his partner. Thoughtful and inspiring, it offers a rare vision of hope that will redefine what we think about our neighbors, our future, and ourselves.

Any book written by this author is a delight - a feast - a learning experience. Just as his book "Walking The Bible" is a classic, this one is also a spiritual pilgrimage as he seeks out and provides the reader with information you could never imagine. He describes the people past and present who lived and now live in the Holy Land - how they all view Abraham a little differently, as well as how they worship in their own way, together and yet apart, within the Holy Land.
I don't know of another person who could write about this subject matter, not offend anyone, and provide the opportunity for an open discussion between people of the three faiths. They really do have some common ground. Abraham - we never knew you! Read this book; you'll love it!
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the study of Abraham, and his relationship to each of these major religions.
The book is broken up into a well written explanation of Abraham’s significance and importance to three of the worlds major religions and though different, explains how much they have in common in Abraham. Wonderful book for individual reading or your small adult study group.
Corollary to this are seemingly widely accepted theories and empirically evidenced phenomena of biological evolution, technological advancement, advancing civilization, and discovery of truth?
Is it possible the history of humankind is well-described as a meandering, with an element of randomness, cyclical and occasional refreshings of truth, and an un-surprising general tendency toward devolution?
Is it instead possible truth was known at the outset and, by a very human tendency toward arrogant, willful searching for complexity, contrary to the wisdom of Ocum’s razor, corrupted?
How arrogant it seems to assume this present era marks the height of evolution, advancement, and knowledge.
As much as I enjoyed Bruce Feiler’s journey and associated insights, and I did, particularly as relates to religions I am so lightly familiar with, I found myself repeatedly questioning some of his conclusions as it seems they derive from this to-me errant premise.
A thoughtful and comprehensive look at the origin of three major religions ...a great read to begin learning about what religions have in common...and what each has done to frame their narrative.

As a student of theology, this is also a worth while time spent reading this texts.
I read it in a single rush - and think you will probably do the same. If you like good storytelling and believe in the possibility of peace - just read it! And if you don't - well, then read it nevertheless, chances are good that Feiler would convince you! I volunteer to translate it into German for free! (-:
