Breach the Dam Build the Ecosystem Become An Ally and Collaborator By Sean Reedy July 16th, 2021 I tuned in to learn about local fish species, but what surfaced was the human story I had been looking to align with. Richard Tejeda, founder and executive director of Saved By Nature, was presenting an interpretive slideshow that highlighted work to restore local watershed ecosystems. Although I was impressed by the signs of hope he shared for local salmon and trout, I was more intrigued by the name of his nonprofit and the story of redemption that blossomed in Coyote Valley after Richard picked up a fishing pole. With a visit to the Saved By Nature website, I found that the visionary became a model of hope himself by immersing in nature and environmental work to transform a challenging past into a life that inspires countless others. I was hooked when I noticed Saved By Nature would be emerging in spring with a volunteer training for naturalists to unite as champions of equitable access to nature. I soon experienced that what makes Saved By Nature stand out is the pathway Richard and his team provide through engaging programming that invites members, volunteers, and staff from all backgrounds to not only become allies of social and environmental justice, but also to flow into being included as active collaborators in these ecosystems that will benefit all of us. As summer began, Richard asked if I would be willing to write a piece on allyship. Being identified as an ally is not self-bestowed and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to learn and reflect. So, how do you become an ally of social and environmental justice and then dive deeper as a collaborator in developing a healthy ecosystem? |
