New Beginnings for Tu B'shvat

Tu B'shvat invites us to celebrate our connection with trees,

evoking community, rebirth, life cycles and new beginnings.

Imagine the family as a tree; the roots the foundation and traditions, the trunk the routines that bring strength, the branches that reach for future hopes and dreams.

This year we celebrate Tu B'shvat in January, a month also of new beginnings.

Goals, hopes, and resolutions give an opportunity to reflect on the past year

and make proactive choices to enhance our lives.

Coinciding with these goals to make these changes,

January is the month with the highest rate of separation and divorce.

For a tree who endures a storm,

the forest around it can help to keep it safe and supported.

As Jewish organizations,

we have the opportunity to provide shelter for these families

as they endure their storms.

Please reach out to us for any help in keeping your community members rooted and strong as they face the challenges of family transitions.

 Happy Tu B'shvat,

Lynn Kaplan

Tip of the Month

As families of divorce begin to untangle their lives, many of them feel they can no longer both belong to the same synagogue or other community organizations.  This can be a great loss not only for the family member that leaves but also for the place they are leaving.  If the opportunity presents itself, the gift we can give them is our time in helping find a new place - a new home - for them to continue with their Jewish engagement.  We have seen that this can be especially challenging within interfaith families, who may even more strongly need that support.
