A Club for Carvers, Scrollers and Woodworkers |

Update from Carvers club Just a little over 2 weeks until Artistry in Wood. Hopefully everyone is putting finish on their entries and will be submitting them. Let's make this the best one yet. This is our biggest event of the year and takes many to make it run smoothly. Hopefully everyone can spend a few hours volunteering to man the event and talk to the public about the artwork and encourage new members. Also, if you can help with set up and take-down there is always lots to do. At our January 13 meeting members voted to transition our meetings to the new Commercial Dr. AIH. Unfortunately, the woodworkers double booked the site with classes. That resulted in us continuing to meet at the Old Seward location until April. Thank you to Callie for suggesting the compromise and thank you to Sandy for agreeing to include the carvers in future schedules. I apologize for the confusion, but I believe that we will do a better job scheduling into the future. Finally, I announced at our last meeting that I will be stepping down as president in May. This year was a busy year for me with retirement and some of my priorities are changing. I expect to be traveling more in 2024 and not readily available for club business. I will continue to be a member and actively carve and create wood projects. And with this announcement I will encourage all members to be active in both club business and ACWA operations. |

Please enter by the door around the back of the building. The main front entrance will be closed since the meeting time is after store hours. Dohn Wood will be our presenter for the February meeting on the topic of how to sharpen hand saws. He will bring saws to sharpen but attendees can bring their own if they want. Dohn is a long-time member of the club. He spends hours volunteering at the Artistry in Wood exhibition demonstrating hand tool use. He enjoys designing and building his own unique pieces. Dohn taught Woodworking at the local Waldorf School for over 10 years. |

January Monthly Meeting Recap: The Woodworkers Chapter meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month from September to May. Thank you to Dave Junge for another of his interesting presentations called “How to Frame your Friends” which covered creative framing techniques. And thanks Dave for passing out to the audience jars of his special formula of lubricant to prevent wood screws from breaking off when installing in hardwoods. . |

Elections were held during the January meeting for Woodworkers Chapter officers. Sandy McKinnis was reelected President and Larry Holman was elected the new Vice President. We have vacancies still for a Secretary and a general Board Director that we need to filled and welcome you to contact us if you are interested in helping the chapter and working with a great team (https://www.alaskacreativewoodworkersassociation.org/contact). Jim Powell decided to take a well-deserved break from the Chapter Vice President role and the ACWA executive board position of acting President. Jim has been dedicated to the success of the ACWA and put in many hours of work to keep us on this path. Many thanks to Jim. |

New Shop Tools: Thanks to the generosity of AIH, we got a delivery in December of a Shark CNC (computerized numerical control) woodworking machine. Jim Powell, John Lime, and Sandy McKinnis assembled it in January getting us closer to offering future classes using the CNC, the design software, and providing you with experiencing it’s benefits and uses. |

Open Shop Program: Woodworking Wednesday: The Open Shop Program is now offered every Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. Our volunteer shop monitors are excited about the new schedule which increases the opportunities for members to have access to the workshop and the shop monitors will be there to help folks with projects as needed. Please Note: If you want to use the shop, you need to sign up on the website as we can only have a maximum of 4 students in the shop on each date (https://www.alaskacreativewoodworkersassociation.org/book-online). You will need to indicate what you are planning to build, what kind of help you need and the time you will be there. |

Classes: Most of our classes are led by experienced woodworker AWCA members for the benefit of all our members to learn, build and get to know fellow members. A big thanks to those instructors for all the hours they put in preparing for and teaching these classes! There is a lot that goes into each class offering. We have some classes in development that have not made it to the website yet for April and May. These include guest instructor, John Parker, from Kodiak, AK who will be teaching an outdoor furniture class and another guest instructor from Lie-Nielsen Toolworks in Warren, Maine teaching 2 hand tool classes and presenting at our May monthly meeting. We will also be adding classes on base cabinet construction, a knife block holder, welded television/ media stand, chainsaw milling and some others. We will keep you posted through the newsletter, but it is best to checking on the website and register as soon as these get posted or you may miss out. Check our website for class descriptions (https://www.alaskacreativewoodworkersassociation.org/classes) and to register (https://www.alaskacreativewoodworkersassociation.org/book-online?category=7e325206-ec7f-4acd-86d1-ec9e6e4b5660). The January classes included Making a Blanket Chest, Cutting Boards (January 13/14), and Hexagonal Boxes with Lids (January 23 and 30) classes. Unfortunately, we do not have pictures from all of these, but we do for the Blanket Chest Class on January 20,21, 27, and 28 taught by Marc Brown. |
