A new friend is providing "Hope" for everyone

Hope is a Golden Retriever that will be privately trained by a dedicated team at Dogsmartz Unleashed to serve as a comfort dog to assist victims and witnesses of crimes for the Mahoning County Prosecutor, Gina DeGenova.

Hope was rescued on Christmas Eve by the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project and was later adopted by Gena DeGenova on February 3, 2023.

Jenny, the owner of Dogsmartz Unleashed, is donating the time to training her in order to make her a certified comfort dog.

"Often times, victims and witnesses of crimes are asked to relive stories of traumatic events multiple times during the pendency of a given case. My research has shown that comfort dogs successfully provide support during this stressful process."

Fear Free Focus

2-leggers vs. 4-leggers:  Whose Problem Is It?

By Karen Becker, Ph.D, CPDT-KA, Fear Free® Certified

April 2023 Fear Free Focus

By Karen Becker

While raising my puppy, Daisy, in the front yard because my reactive dog needed time to adjust to a baby sister from the peace of his backyard, I taught her a bad habit. It seemed fun and a great way to keep her busy early in the morning when I was half asleep, but she was raring to go: chase the long slender leaf of a daylily plant. Today, as she approaches her third birthday and has run of the backyard with her brother, I must remind her “leave it” whenever I walk through the yard carrying to the compost sticks or yard debris and long leaves. If I don’t keep an eye pealed for her, she rushes at my hand full of leaves and grabs as many as she can to frolic around the yard re-distributing things in the yard.

In Fear Free training there’s a saying, “Your dog is not giving you a problem; your dog is having a problem.” And sometimes we create our own problems!

As our dog’s human, we sometimes need to stop and think, “What am I teaching her while I am doing this?” And even more specifically, “How might this fun puppy game backfire when she is 70 pounds?” By taunting Daisy repeatedly with the lily leaf, I gave her permission to chase things that are long and slender, and especially ones that are in my hands. She was having fun and it was “cute!”

Recently a similar “backfire” creeped into a Therapy Dog Prep class. A required crowd scene scenario in a therapy dog test, an adult dog was “bumped in the behind” while he was walking with his 2-legger – which sent him jumping in the air and happily reeling around looking for who bumped him. The owner laughed, “Oh no, that’s a game we played with him and his siblings to get their attention as pups!”

 Happy Birthday! (April 1st)

Stacey has lived with dogs all her life and discovered her passion for dog training and behavior when she adopted one of her dogs who had been taken from a puppy mill with severe fear issues. In learning how to help him, she discovered how much she loved using positive training and behavior modification methods to help dogs and their people live happier lives together. Stacey loves spending time with her dogs enjoying walks, hikes, and dog sports like Treibball, Agility, and Flyball as well as Freestyle. She also volunteers with sheltie rescue.

From Cooper's Trainer, Matthew:

Cooper struggled in Beginner Obedience class due to being extremely impulsive. He struggled especially with his stays and staying calm. They are almost finished with my Get Control class and he has made huge strides. He is doing excellent with his stay work, excellent with remaining much calmer, and excellent with not jumping anymore. He still has a ways to go, but he has made the biggest improvement out of all my students.

Private Training Sessions

Privates can be done for specific behavior issues such as but not limited to fear, anxiety, aggression or if basic training (obedience/manners) is desired.  The initial private session is 90 minutes long.  Based upon the information provided to us on our behavior history form, we will prepare a preliminary plan. Upon arrival, we will first observe the situation, implement management changes and teach new skills sets.  After the visit, we will provide a typed Behavior Treatment Plan for you to keep and use as a blueprint to work from.

For any behavior issues, we will also send letter to your Veterinarian (if you approve) to advise them of our observations and our plan moving forward.  We will work closely with your veterinarian in cases that require this.  The plan will be adjusted accordingly based upon our observations and may be further adjusted as we discuss progress in the weeks ahead.  You will have access to us for the lifetime of your pet after your visit via phone, text or email for any questions and/or concerns.  We request you provide us updates weekly or however often is needed via phone, email or text.

If you attend a private session at our facility, we do require your dog to be vaccinated with the following: Rabies, Bordetella, Distemper and a negative fecal.
