Getting back the Building!

After such a long time we finally came and we took handover of the KPC building.

Those of you who have followed our journey over the last two years will know that we have faced a number of hurdles to get to this point, but WE MADE IT!

Our very first event back into the KPC building!

We were excited to have had Glasgow Community Food Network’s first networking event of the year 'Looking Forward, Looking Back.' It was great to see people back inside the building.

Upgrades!

There are so many things that we've upgraded starting from new door vinyl signs, fancy new lanyards, accessible toilets and much more. We work towards being as accessible and inclusive as possible.

Harvest Festival

In September, we celebrated the growing season and new beginnings in the garden of our renovated building, welcoming old friends and new to mark the Harvest Festival with a programme of arts, crafts, and music.

Paisley Road West Fest

At the start of October, we were overjoyed to welcome more partner groups and organisations than we could list to join for Paisley Road West Fest celebrations!

This was our biggest event of the year!

đŸŒ±Community Wellbeing and Participation
Highlights 2022đŸŒ±

It has been great meeting many new people at the community meals, as well as welcoming back familiar faces. We supported on average 20 people each month through one-to-one conversations, and completed on average 28 signposts and 16 referrals to other organisations and services each month.

English language conversation groups

We started two English language conversation groups where we welcomed participants to meet others, socialise and practice speaking English in an informal setting.

Refugee Festival: Never Give Up: Coming Together in Celebration of Our Stories

We ran an English language conversation group, where some community members came up with ideas for what then became our Refugee Festival event – we facilitated them taking a lead and sharing their cooking, stories, dance and art.

Glasgow Science Centre Trips

Our 5 trips to the Glasgow Science Centre made sure we got the balance between arts and science! We saw 3 fantastic films, experienced the Imax cinema, learned about stars in the planetarium and enjoyed a whole range of activities from building and racing Lego land yachts, to looking at soil under the microscope.

New Scots Group

Our Community Wellbeing and Participation Worker, Rago, has been the New Scots’ Group which welcomes everyone to build confidence and language skills, exchange information and peer support, and make both confidence and language skills.

Men's Group

Our Community Mental Health Worker, Kevin, has been supporting the Community Learning and Development team with facilitating the Tuesday Men’s Group!

Tuesday Board Games

We have also been playing board games at the Tuesday meals – the unofficial Ludo tournament will continue in 2023!

Making Skills sessions with Stef

In June, our arts and crafts facilitator Stef introduced some of our community members to an array of different making skills: jesmonite casting, leather working, wire techniques for jewellery, and textile weaving.

Woven In Govan Exhibition Launch

We welcomed the ‘Woven in Govan’ exhibition launch in June!

Musicians in Exile performance

We also welcomed live music: Musicians in Exile shared sounds from across the world with us in July and September.

Embroidery Sessions with TS Beall

We gave embroidery a go with artist TS Beall leading on ‘Stitch & Blether’ sessions.

Start of partnership with Glasgow Tool Library

We also started our partnership with Glasgow Tool Library! Every Thursday, our community members can learn more about their work, sign up to become members, and borrow tools. GTL also held a film screening of ‘The Cloud Forest’ after one of our community meals in December!

Stories of People and Trees with Jessica Kerr

Local artist Jessica Kerr played cello to accompany an introduction to her project Stories of People and Trees.

Guitar and Ukulele sessions in Partnership with Music Broth

We partnered with Music Broth to run a series of guitar and ukulele sessions from October to December.

Gathering the Seed event with Glasgow Seed Library

Our guests from Glasgow Seed Library ran a Seedy Social and a ‘Colonial Seeds’ talk at a community meal in May, and Gathering the Seed event in November.

Clothes mending at some of our Tuesday community lunches

We welcomed back our volunteer Snaa to offer clothes mending and support with learning to sew at some of our Tuesday community lunches. There will be more mending sessions in 2023!

KPCreative Sessions

We launched our KPCreative Sessions, a series of workshops being hosted at KPC by local artists and creatives that began in November and ran over winter to brighten our days and teach us new skills and perspectives. There are more coming in the new year!

Reinstatement of Kinning Park Community Council

Kinning Park Community Council was officially reinstated. This is a great opportunity for representing the opinions and needs of the community.

Community Learning and Development and Community Wellbeing and Participation have started a men’s group. The group is focused on doing activities related to physical and mental health to improve wellbeing.

Economies for Healthier Lives Community Panel

We were part of a community panel to co-produce a Health Inequalities Assessment Tool that will measure health impacts from construction projects in the Glasgow City Region. This panel is led by the Scottish Community Development Centre.

Volunteer Callout!

A Baby and Toddler group is starting at KPC! We are looking for volunteers to help host the sessions. This involves making sure the space is ready for the group like setting out chairs, and preparing tea and coffee. We are hoping to establish a pool of volunteers and having 2 ‘hosts’ per week so that it works out as a monthly commitment.
