Learning from Our Elders

ANCESTRAL ROAD TRIP

______

January has an air of new beginnings and new intentions. New is great, but so is old knowledge, albeit not highly valued in this part of the world.

As my life changes, some things break down and new things emerge and grow, prompting me to think about my family ecosystem.

I invited my dad on a road trip to our shared past. I recorded his stories, and decided to write my very first essay. It is long (!) - and definitely another way of presenting myself, instead of the conventional bio of merits and doings.

I am publishing it and telling you about it, because I hope to inspire you to look at your own lineage and (re)connect with ancestors, you may or may not have met. Sharing stories and writing are practices that seem to transcend time and connect you to fellow human beings and to yourself. Introspection is also suitable for the season.

Bon voyage,

ADVICE FROM OUR ELDERS

_______

Other cultures value old knowledge.

We, however, value (re)inventing and innovating. Our elders are seldom asked nor heard, despite having so much life experience. As much as intergenerational conversations can be tough these years as values, ways, and language rapidly change, an easy, respectful, and loving way to reach your elders is to ask them to share their life wisdom. Give you a good, old piece of advice.

Advice No. 1

Never accept an answer if you don't know how the question was posed.
