FilComCen Celebrates One Year

by Geo Robrigado

The Filipino Community Centre celebrated its first anniversary on 04 October 2016 via a fund-raising dinner at the PappaRich Malaysian Restaurant in Grey St, Wellington CBD.

The dinner, attended by members and friends of the Filipino community, was offered as a thanksgiving for the continuous support of the community to the Centre as well as a way to raise funds for the upkeep of the centre.

Guests were treated to scrumptious meals prepared by the talented kitchen staff of the restaurant. They were also serenaded by the Wellington Filipino Community Choir.

WFCC Joins Labour Weekend Celebrations

by Geo Robrigado

The Wellington Filipino Community Choir once again showcased their singing abilities as they participated in the cultural show of the Pistang Pinoy sa Wellington during the Labour Weekend festivities.

The choir sang four songs, two of which were songs in Te Reo Maori arranged specifically for the choir, while the remaining two songs are in Filipino. The two Maori songs, Maku, which denotes friendship between the Maori people and their “guests” (in this case, the Filipinos), and Tarakihi, which depicts the story of the locust and is a metaphor for strength, were arranged especially for the WFCC by Rim D. Paul, conductor of the National Maori Choir who also served as guest-conductor during the performance. The two Filipino songs were Bahay Kubo, a folk favourite, and Bituing Walang Ningning, a very famous movie theme song popularised by the Megastar Sharon Cuneta.

The choir received huge applauses and standing ovations during their performance. For a sample of one of their performance, click on the youtube link below.

Continuously Building The Community - How Can You Help?

Alkansiya

This is a "piggy bank" version in the Philippines that is made out of coconut shell with a hole that will only fit a coin. The concept is to fill it with coins and the Trustees will announce an event to break this "alkansiya". Whatever the total amount of the coins will be donated to the Filipino Community Centre project.

Adopt-a-brick

A number of bricks are offered for adoption, reserved and paid in advance by interested individuals, organizations, businesses, offices and politicians. These bricks are then set aside in a “warehouse bank" that will eventually be used to build the centre.
