october 2016 Update

CFK Featured Athlete - Quinn McCormick

We are so proud of all of our CFK Athletes and will be featuring our Athletes in our newsletter and on our website.  This month, we are very pleased to introduce Quinn!

Age: 24

Occupation: Retirement Planning

Date Started CFK:  September 8, 2015

In general, what is your athletic background? I played many sports growing up but volleyball has always been my favorite, maybe it’s because of my height :). I played for Kalamazoo College and I currently play indoor as well as beach volleyball. Almost every weekend you will find me playing in a league or a tournament. Through playing college volleyball I did a lot of lifting which has helped me transition to doing CrossFit.

How did you learn about CrossFit Kalamazoo? I was looking for a gym to join, but realized I wanted more than just a place to workout. I wanted to find a workout that had the lifting as well as team elements that I had through volleyball. Several people I knew were doing CrossFit and CrossFit Kalamazoo happened to be closest to my house, so I gave it a try. Best decision I could have made.

How has CrossFit Kalamazoo changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? I am in better shape now than I was as a collegiate athlete. My vertical has increased and helped my volleyball game significantly. CrossFit has also changed my life by bringing so many wonderful people into it! Through them I am held accountable and enjoy coming to workout!

List short/long term goals you would like to accomplish through CrossFit Kalamazoo: My current CrossFit goals are to be able to do pull-ups as well as double unders.

What do you like most about CrossFit Kalamazoo?  I enjoy the amazing people that I have the privilege of working out with and the way that CrossFit pushes me harder than I could ever push myself. I also love getting to do the Cupid Shuffle at 6am :)

Achievements you’d like to highlight within your life: Completing my college degree in mathematics is something I am proud of but I can’t say I have done anything noteworthy. Although, I did find an error in my math book once and I got to call the company so they could have them reprinted, it’s the little things in life :)

List a few things we don’t know about you: I lived abroad for 3 ½ months with a host family in Costa Rica where I studied Spanish and learned about the culture. My K College volleyball team visited me in Costa Rica and we played against many Costa Rican teams. The highlight was playing against the Costa Rican national team; while we got our butts kicked, it was an honor to compete with them

What is your favorite CrossFit movement? Power cleans and skin the cat

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement? Snatch

What are you currently doing to try to improve your diet? I have a major sweet tooth so diet can be a struggle for me. That is why I decided to do the Whole30 challenge with the group. I work so hard at CrossFit that I wanted to see what changes I would notice by dedicating the same time and effort to my diet.

Favorite movie: I have three: Remember the Titans, Legally Blonde, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Favorite and/or current book: Favorite: The Harry Potter Series (Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite) Current: Girl on the Train

Favorite music genre/artist: Genre: Country Artist: Michael Buble

In 10 words or less, what does CF mean to you? Pushing myself to more than I ever felt capable of

Our On-Ramp class provides coaching in a smaller group setting and is mandatory for those who are new to CrossFit.

This class is programmed to teach you the movements, techniques and lingo and is an hour in duration.  We want to ensure that you have a good foundation built before you jump into our regular WOD!  The cost of this class is $65 (up to 8 classes scheduled over a 2 week period - 5 are mandatory before you move on to a regular WOD)

Classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday at 8:00 p.m.   If you are not able to attend this scheduled class, we can reschedule as needed & there will be an additional $10 per class for any class done outside of our regular time slot. Call Coach Tim at 269-251-1677 for more information.

Try A Class - Now Offered Every Saturday!

We have opened up our Saturday 10am WOD as a time for CFK Athletes to bring friends and we invite others who want to try CrossFit to this class!

This option will allow you to join our CFK Athletes in a partner WOD and you will be encouraged to do it at your pace.  This is a great opportunity to try out a workout at our facility, visit with our CFK community and be a part of the Community that makes CrossFit Kalamazoo so great!

The cost to join this class is $10 (limited to newbies to CrossFit and does not apply to experienced CrossFitters dropping in).  If you sign up for our On-Ramp class, the $10 intro fee will be applied to the cost of the On-Ramp class. After the first class you may still attend the Saturday Partner WOD as a non CFK member by purchasing a $15 Standard Drop-in.
