The Anatomy of a Trip

One of the regular activities here at the children's home is hosting volunteer work teams visiting from various places around the USA. Since arriving in April we have hosted five teams for various lengths of time. We just finished hosting two Summer teams from July 13th through August 10th. Below are some highlights of the activities during a trip here.

Our first team was made up of families from all over the US as well as Dave and Michele’s family who run the First Love Children’s Home in the Philippines.

The first week this team was here, they worked on some playground improvement projects and then helped us to pull off our very first Olympics Day. It was a lot of fun, but a bit crazy at times. These kids are super competitive and hate to loose at anything, especially sports!

During the second week the team organized and ran a Vacation Bible School for Hoywick School. It has become something the students and teachers look forward to twice a year. This time we explored the Nature of God as Provider, Protector, Savior, and King through Bible stories, songs, and games made just for them.

Phoebe, Zipporah, Veronica (our college girls) and Maxwell (one of our high school boys) were a HUGE help!

(Hoywick is a school in the Kibera slum which First Love assists throughout the year by providing food for their lunches.)

Our 2nd team, which arrived the same day the last of the 1st team departed, was made up of high school students from California along with their youth leaders. They are all gifted in music and dance, so they were a HUGE hit with our kids here. The team conducted workshops with various instruments and also taught the children how to worship through dance. During freetime they played many, many games of soccer and four-square.

This team was also very helpful with continuing the playground projects. They hauled truck loads of sand for the sandboxes and helped Larry with laying stone around the gazebo.

Many of our teams take the opportunity while here in Africa, to experience one of our famous safari's. An amazing variety of wildlife, scenery and culture can be enjoyed either at Nairobi National Park right here in Nairobi or in the Masai Mara Game Reserve located in southwest Kenya. It's an experience you wouldn't want to miss!

One of the great things about having teams here is when our staff is able to honor our guests with an authentic Kenyan dinner. Later during the evening the children put on a talent show for our guests. One of our girls (bottom center) is in her first year of college studying hospitality. She did an amazing job as our MC for the evening! The kids had a special treat at the end of the second teams time here. They bought nearly 60 pizzas for the kids to enjoy. Not a slice was left over... imagine that!
