The Robotics Meeting a few weeks ago was conducted by Kush Garg, Sloan Davis, Mahima Ravi, and Mahek Kakkar.

In the Robotics meeting we talked about the procedures and timeline of TSA (Technology Student Association) Individual Entries, engaged in some fun activities, and looked at some previous McKamy TSA entries that took 1st in the State of Texas last year.

The meeting started off great by our President, Kush, who explained what we were going to accomplish at the meeting and also gave some insight to TSA. Kush also gave a warm welcome and recited the MRC Mission Statement.

Each team manager then filled out the attendance for each team member. Our Secretary, Mahima, reminded everyone the October Student Meeting Minutes were approved by Committee and are posted on our MRC website mckamyrobotics.com under Student Resources.

Reporter, Mahek, introduced our team building activity “Maximizing Our Potential” facilitated by Mrs. Martin. In the activity each team was given nine sticks that were divided into three triangles. The challenge was to make as many triangles as possible just by only moving three Popsicle sticks. Many teams had found six or seven triangles, the winning team discovered thirteen and we learned the maximum was 17! In this activity, each team learned that it is important to work together, develop a plan and listen to everyone's ideas. We also learned that many times there are a number of solutions to one problem and those solutions can be viewed in many aspects by just adjusting a few things.

Road to TSA!

Vice President, Sloan, lead the discussion on TSA. Each member learned that they could submit one TSA Regional entry that will be paid for by McKamy Middle School in any of the over 200 categories from the TSA Middle School Rulebook. The student does not have to be present at the  regional event, unless one of the few that says it requires an interview.  We also were reminded that each of the 10 teams will be participating in TSA VEX Skills Challenges for Programming and Driving, which they can practice at regular VEX Competitions on 1/16 and 2/6 .  All members and teams were encouraged to study the TSA VEX entry! The top 2 MRC teams at TSA Regionals will go to TSA State in Waco, TX in April to represent McKamy.

A link to the resources are on our MRC website under Student Resources...remember to keep checking as TSA makes enhancements often. Sloan and Raul spoke about how they teamed up and submitted a video game design entry, which is one of the few that are National Qualifying Entries with interview. Sloan and Andrew spoke about their programming entry and Sullivan shared his entry for computer generated architecture design he was inspired to do after being introduced to Sketch Up in Mrs. Richardson’s class last year. Entries were passed around the room for everyone to see.

Mrs. Bhaskar will be heading up the TSA Committee from the MRBC Board and both she and Sloan encouraged everyone to submit an entry in any one of the categories.  Final submission to MRBC for TSA is February 22nd!

Kush and Sloan then started a round table where each team could ask questions about TSA. Many wonderful questions were heard as Raul, Sloan, Sullivan, Andrew and Kush answered them to the best of their ability. Many teams learned new things and were encouraged to begin researching over Thanksgiving break!

At the conclusion of our meeting we wanted to say thank you to our sponsors we have received funds, so we went to the stairwell and took thank you pictures for Summit Club of Flower Mound who granted us $500 and Constellation Energy that also awarded us $500.  We will be sendng the pictures with thank you notes.

To conclude the newsletter I would like to thank everyone who has helped make McKamy Robotics Club become successful and look foward to reporting out in January on our first VEX Competitions!

Keep Calm and Robot On!
