In The News: One theme dominates the recent youth sports news - LIABILITY. The liability issue has two parts: insurance premiums and lawsuits.
The insurance issue is described in the article Risk Management is Answer to Football's Insurance Problem. "If you’re football, hockey or soccer, the insurance business doesn’t want you.” The article explains that insurance premiums are going up, but there are strategies that sports organizations can implement to mitigate risk and exposure.
The issue of lawsuits is covered in multiple articles. NCAA, Colleges Hit With New Deluge of Concussion Lawsuits starts, "A new wave of football concussion lawsuits charges the NCAA didn’t protect student-athletes from later-life brain injuries, and also targets dozens of private universities." Family of Santa Fe football player files suit over severe concussion is one of many articles discussing the rising number of concussion and other injury lawsuits in youth sports. Lack of training, poor decision-making, inadequate documentation and communication are the main issues.
