From 15 September to 6 November the Canadian photographer Dina Goldstein exhibits ‘Beyond Fairy Tales’ in the Artelli Gallery in Antwerp. In her pop surrealist work, she gives fairy tales and traditions a good dose of reality. She tackles the world of charming princesses. She puts the characters in the current context. She makes magic work but not in the way the viewer expects it ...
In The Dollhouse
Barbie, who attracts many little girls and lives in a pink world, is now a woman from every day life. Goldstein imagines the perfect doll with her partner Ken as if they were real persons: how would their life be in a loveless marriage?
Fallen Princesses
Goldstein liberates fairy tales from the usual clichés. The ideal beauty image is put under the hammer. Age, obesity, cancer, addiction, failed dreams, self-esteem … are kill-joys but reality in life.
Gods Of Suburbia
In this conceptual photo series Goldstein analyzes religion in the modern context of technology, science and secularism. She challenges the viewer to think about the relevance of former ethical conduct and morals in a society characterized by materialism and consumption.
