Pete and Kathie have been members of the OKC Swing Club for over 6 years, and serve as an unofficial welcoming committee for the club. Pete exemplifies the saying “I’ve never met a stranger,” and is always at hand with a joke and a smile. Kathie’s creativity knows no bounds, as witnessed by her memorable “Flower Power” bus at the April Birthday Party (photos below.)
How did you get started with West Coast Swing?
Pete: I was looking for something new. I had retired from teaching fencing in order to care for my wife who was ill. After she passed away, I went back to fencing but it wasn’t the same. I already loved dancing, and found my passion with West Coast Swing!
Kathie: I had recovered from breast cancer treatment, and wanted to get out and be more active. A friend invited me to a Serendipity dance. I met some other people there who invited me to go with them to WCS lessons. The same month that I started in pink class, Pete had brought his niece and nephew and he came to pink class along with them. That’s how I began WCS, and how I met Pete!
What do you enjoy most in a follower/leader?
Kathie: A strong lead but not rough, and someone who doesn’t make me feel intimidated.
Pete: A girl who can follow! Seriously, I love dancing with everyone, beginners to high level. I love dancing in all categories. Although I’m a strong lead, I like a soft response – smooth, not jerky - from followers.
What motivates you?
Kathie: Pete! And friends I’ve met here. Dance is good, fun exercise.
What’s your most embarrassing dance moment?
Pete: I was on the dance floor, just about to dance with Mickey, and I kind of ran up to her. My legs slid out from under me and I fell flat. I knew how to fall from judo, so I didn’t hurt myself. Mickey asked “Are you OK, Pete?” and I responded, to everyone’s laughter, “I’m OK, Mickey - I’m just falling for you!”
What’s something we don’t know about you?
Pete: I was born in Puerto Rico, grew up in New York City.
Kathie: I have a twin brother.
