Best Practices for Activating EMS
“Preparedness is best thought of as a process—a continuing sequence of analyses, plan development, and the acquisition of individual and team performance skills achieved through training, drills, exercises, and critiques.” Journal of Emergency Medical Services
It’s one of the first lessons in a CPR, AED, and first aid class: the activation of an EMS system by an untrained or minimally trained bystander initiates the process to get professional help and resources to those in need.
If you suspect a medical emergency has occurred, activating EMS by calling 9-1-1 is likely the most important and influential action you can take. Arguably, for most situations, it may be the only action necessary to result in an effective overall response to the problem.
When in doubt, activate EMS
Don’t hang up
Even though you’re still on the line with 9-1-1, help is already on the way
9-1-1 call-takers can instruct you on what to do
Only activate EMS when you suspect an emergency

Texas HB 76 - Cody Stephens Foundation
"House Bill 76 offers student athletes information and the opportunity to request an electrocardiogram (ECG) screening as part of the required physical evaluation to participate in University Interscholastic League (UIL) sponsored athletic activities.
Every year, students across Texas and the nation die from sudden cardiac arrest. Many of these deaths could have been or could be prevented with the implementation of an electrocardiogram or “ECG”, a medical test that scans for heart abnormalities. SCA is the #1 cause of death for student athletes and the #1 cause of death on student campuses.
Offering information about this medical examination could bring certain heart conditions to light that may otherwise go unnoticed. This bill will allow physicians and parents to identify at-risk students early, and allow them to take the necessary precautions before participating in athletic activities."
