CFK Featured Athlete: Jen Saeckl

 

Age: 27

 

Occupation: Attorney

In general, what is your athletic background?  Growing up I figure skated and swam.  Through college and law school I did triathlons and was a bit of a gym rat.  I always stay involved in athletic activities but I am not naturally athletic at all.

 

How did you learn about CrossFit Kalamazoo? I was looking for something new to supplement my routine and wanted to give CrossFit a try.

 

How has CrossFit Kalamazoo changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? I now look forward to working out as a fun, productive hobby that has helped not only improve my fitness but also conquer fears I didn’t know I had (like being upside down or jumping onto a box…)

List short/long term goals you would like to accomplish through CrossFit Kalamazoo: Still working on that elusive pull-up

 

What do you like most about CrossFit Kalamazoo? It’s a fun, structured part of my week—I love having an hour where I can clear my head and forget about day-to-day stressors with a group of supportive people.

 

What is your favorite CrossFit movement? Back squats

 

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement? Wallballs, burpees, snatches….

 

What are you currently doing to try to improve your diet? Eat less garbage, more plants.

 

Favorite movie: Charlie Chaplin’s “The Circus”

Favorite and/or current book: Michael Ondaatje’s “In the Skin of a Lion”

Favorite music genre/artist: That’s pretty hard to pin down, but it tends toward indie folk. My Spotify library is pretty eclectic, though.

 

Achievements you’d like to highlight within your life:  I’m most proud of my education at the University of Toronto and NYU Law, and the corresponding career path that took me from Toronto to Kenya to Northern Canada to NYC and then landed me in Kalamazoo.  I am so happy to have found a fulfilling legal career here.

List a few things we don’t know about you:  As a kid, I entered my family in a draw to win a trip to Jamaica and we actually won.  Then, while we were there, I entered us in another draw to win a trip back, and we won that one too.  I haven’t had an ounce of luck since then.

 

The most fun job I ever had was working as a tour guide on a bus tour from Toronto to Niagara Falls.  I got to write a lot of corny jokes, met a lot of wacky people, and earned free wine!  Plus, I got paid to go on every attraction in the area, including helicopter rides over the Falls.

In 10 words or less, what does CF mean to you?  Getting a little bit better at life every day!

In general, what is your athletic background?  I played rubgy in high school and then lifted weights occassionaly after that.

 

How did you learn about CrossFit Kalamazoo? It was Jen's idea.

 

How has CrossFit Kalamazoo changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? I look better in a T-shirt and can squat a lot more than when I started.

List short/long term goals you would like to accomplish through CrossFit Kalamazoo:  Handstand push up, muscle up

 

What do you like most about CrossFit Kalamazoo? Being forced to do the complete workout I'd never do on my own.

 

What is your favorite CrossFit movement? clean and jerk, ring pull ups

 

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement? overhead squats

 

What are you currently doing to try to improve your diet? I try not to buy ice-cream when grocery shopping.

Favorite and/or current book: Shogun, Remains the Day

Favorite music genre/artist: 60's-70's pop-rock, 90's one-hit wonders

 

Achievements you’d like to highlight within your life:  Made the Dean's List a couple times.

Festivus Games Partner WOD

"An amazing Festivus Partner WOD day for all of our CFK Athletes!!! I cannot tell you how proud I am of each and every one of you today. Many of you I knew had it in you, but some of you, surprised the hell out of me. But above all else, I think most of you surprised the hell out of yourselves. I know you all walked in there this morning with nervous trepidation and fear of failure, but you all perservered and floated out with confidence and a great sense of self pride. On-Ramp Classes

Our On-Ramp class provides coaching in a smaller group setting and is mandatory for those who are new to CrossFit. This class is programmed to teach you the movements, techniques and lingo as we want to ensure you have a good foundation built before you jump into our regular WOD!  

 

This is on our schedule Monday through Thursday at 8:00 p.m (core time). Please call if this time doesn't work for you as other times may be available at 5pm, 6pm or 7pm (depending on Coach availability).

 

The duration is 1 hour and up to 5 classes are scheduled over a 2 week period (plus 2 optional Saturday WODS).

Try A Class - Offered Every Saturday! 

Ready to check CFK out? You can  "Try A Class"  every Saturday at 10am and join us in our Partner WOD!   

 

When you join us for the first time, you will be partnered with a CFK Athlete and you will be encouraged to do it at your pace.  This is a great opportunity to try out a workout at our facility, visit with our CFK community and be a part of the Community that makes CrossFit Kalamazoo so great!  

 

The cost to join this class is $10 (limited to newbies to CrossFit and does not apply to experienced CrossFitters dropping in).  If you sign up for our On-Ramp class, the $10 intro fee will be applied to the cost of the On-Ramp class. 

 

Reservations are required so please call 269-251-1677 or send an email to crossfitkalamzoo@aol.com to reserve a spot.  Since class starts on the hour, please arrive 15 minutes early to check in, complete a waiver and stretch.
