Some Thoughts about Sewing Machines |
Old sewing machines may not be as cute or have as many interesting stitches as the shiny new machine which you will find at your big box store. But there are some good reasons to take another look at the heavy, perhaps oddly-colored old machine on the curb, at the thrift store, in Grandma’s attic (if it is in the basement, move it upstairs, STAT!), … or here at SewGreen@ROC. |
1. Metal - Heavy metal is good. Metal parts not only last longer but they are easier to replace. If an old metal machine is locked up, often I can persuade it with cleaning and good quality oil to get moving again. 2. Motor - Pre-1980 sewing machines have better motors. I especially like the Kenmore motors manufactured in Japan. Need to sew denim or canvas? These are the correct power tool short of an industrial sewing machine.
3. Maintenance - Metal machines tend to be easier to open up and really clean and oil. Plastic machine casings are more vulnerable to breakage. 4. It’s the Green Thing to Do - Lots of vintage sewing machines have seen little to no wear and for sure should not go to the dump or the scrapper without realizing their potential and living a full, useful life.

If you buy a machine at our shop, we will work to understand the best machine-match for the type of sewing you want to do. If you purchase a machine and decide that you want to change or upgrade, your original purchase price will be credited toward the next machine. In some cases it will be an even trade. We want you to get into your machine sewing without fear! If you find a machine in your travels (or perhaps one hiding forlorn in your own home), I am happy to take a look, clean it, assess and help you understand how it works. Every Saturday at the shop, our Kids' Sewing Club keeps us hopping. We don't always know who'll be here, but we always have at least one kid wanting to sew, and usually we have a handful! In the photo collage below left: Modesty (far left), Elena (upper), and Travis (lower) with pillows they made one Saturday. In the photo below right: Ty'Rique (left) with a blanket he pieced from scraps of fleece, and Tracy (right) wearing a skirt she made from a Scrappy-Land, one-yard roll of knit fabric in just a couple of hours. We love creating with each of the kids who join us Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.! |
