A Message from Father Bill The beautiful weather outside tells us that Spring has truly sprung. Fresh flowers are coming to life out of the ground, leaves are sprouting forth on trees and bushes, and grass is growing at a fast and furious rate. As we see new life all around us in the beauty of nature, let us remember the new life we have received in Jesus Christ. New and eternal life was purchased for us by the suffering, dying, and rising of Jesus. Let us accept the gift of salvation offered to us by our Risen Lord, and bask in the glory of our new life in Christ. ~Fr. Bill |

Deeper Learning Over the last six weeks I’ve shared the Holy Family Academy mission and vision and our focus on designing critical thinkers, collaborators, and creators both locally and nationally. Locally, I’ve been part of a working committee that the Heinz Endowments has asked to imagine the future of learning in Pittsburgh through a project called the XQ Super School. Our model at Holy Family Academy is certainly in line with the working committee’s vision! Nationally, I was fortunate enough to be selected as part of a panel at SXSWedu in Austin, TX where I talked about building culture in schools through the use of design thinking (Design thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation. It's the intersection of human needs, technology and business. As learning becomes more personalized, design thinking becomes especially important). SXSWedu is an annual conference focusing on innovations in learning. Like other SXSW festivals, SXSWedu seeks to converge a wide variety of stakeholders who share an interest in 21st century innovation and best practices. “100 Pieces of Gratitude/ Mr. Alec Baldwin” By: Amy DiMichele Following the guidelines of Lesson/Painting Passion, Art Teacher, Amy DiMichele led her students to paint a portrait of Mr. Alec Baldwin as a token of gratitude for his donation of 100 tickets for students to attend the Symphony at Heinz Hall for a one-night event, Alec’s Playlist. During the lesson, students continued to study color theory and learn about Andy Warhol, one of the leading figures of the Visual Art Movement, while they continued to listen to the passion of the great composers (classical music is played throughout the year during the work process). | | |

Field-Based Learning @ The Carnegie Library On Friday, April 17, HFA 9th graders explored the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh on Federal Street. Students made their own super-hero buttons, recorded music with the library’s instruments and recording equipment, and earned Library Navigator Badges by completing a library scavenger hunt. Through a partnership with CLP, all HFA students will be provided library cards. Today’s library cards can be used for more than books. Students may download e-books, check out movies and video games, and participate in after school activities. |
