Dear Mayfair Family and Friends!

We welcome Autumn with open arms.  The cool, crisp fall air is surely just around the corner and the excitement of holidays is fast approaching. In October,  we will be hosting prospective families and community members on the 10th at our Mayfair Fall Showcase. ecoSTEM explores current and future environmental problems and excites students about the possibilities while empowering them to be the change.

Many of our 2018-2019 Focus Projects are underway.  There is a buzz around campus as students become advocates.  We are also very excited to see that many of our projects are now identified on campus with some "ecoSTEM" yard sign labels.  This will help visitors be able to identify all the projects that are in progress.

Kindergarten → [Butterfly Garden Water Feature] The butterfly garden has been trimmed, replanted, and cleaned.  There have been a few monarch caterpillars that have already arrived and have been chomping away at our tasty plants.

First Grade → [Interactive Sundial] We are working on securing an ideal location for the sundial and creating a "big picture" plan of the interactive gardenscapes that will be in the area.

Second Grade → [Paper Recycling Awareness] The second graders have been collecting their paper waste daily and charting the weight of their collection each week.  They have a giant graph in their math/science classroom where they are recording the data.  Ms. Merriman brings the collected paper home each week and places it in her at-home recycling bin to ensure that it makes the trip the recycling center.  She is dedicated to this project!

Third Grade → [Solve the Spork Problem] The third graders surely are enthusiastic about their project.  They have a large trash bin in their classroom where they are dumping unused sporks.  One of our Sprouts has even declared they work as a "Spork Revolution!"  Go kids, go!!!!

Fourth Grade → [Erosion Prevention] The fourth graders will soon be spending some time studying different ways to create walls using natural materials.  This learning will serve as a catalyst for solving the soil erosion problem in the courtyard garden.  There is a sign posted there to identify the "erosion observation zone."

Fifth Grade → [Hydroponics] The fifth graders have assembled the hydroponic garden tower in Mrs. Juneau's classroom.  They created illustrated models that explain how the garden tower functions.  Then they worked in collaborative groups to research and design outdoor hydroponic garden structures.  The students' designs inspired Mrs. Hand to write a QSM grant to fund their project.  Our fingers are crossed that their ideas will be funded!

As these projects get underway, we will be looking for parent and community volunteers to assist with collecting materials and contributing manpower hours.

If you would be willing to assist, please contact Emily Hand (ejohnson4@ebrschools.org).

CHECKS: Please be sure your child's name is in the memo section of any checks turned in to the office so that we can credit the correct accounts.

Any notes/money that will be sent to the office should include:

o Student's full name (first and last)

o Date

o Teacher's name

o Very specific information (especially when related to changes in transportation)

Example:

Sept. 17, 2018

Johnny Appleseed in Mrs. America's class will be going home on the bus this Friday, September 21, 2018.  His bus number is 9999.

Sincerely,
