HAZARDOUS WEATHER
It's that time of year. Lightning strikes, tornadoes, hurricanes, oh my! Is your sports organization prepared? Most of us know that the standard policy is "when the thunder roars, go indoors" or "If you can see it (lightning) flee it; if you can hear it (thunder), clear it."
- The existence of blue sky and the absence of rain are not protection from lightning. Lightning can, and does, strike as far as 10 miles away from the rain shaft. It does not have to be raining for lightning to strike.
- Designate a "weather watcher." Here Tom's Guide to the best weather apps.
- No team should be allowed to return to practice and/or competition for 30 minutes after the last lightning seen or thunder heard. (Ref)
