2018 Reading Challenge!

We've decided to do a Reading Challenge that doesn't involve any gimmicks or prizes. We want to show kids that it's fun to read just for the sake of reading. There are 12 categories from which they can pick - one for each month of the year. You can recommend books on our Padlet page. Click on the button below to access it. Audiobook of the Month

John Grisham novel!

"A gang of thieves stage a daring heist from a secure vault deep below Princeton University’s Firestone Library. Their loot is priceless, but Princeton has insured it for twenty-five million dollars.Bruce Cable owns a popular bookstore in the sleepy resort town of Santa Rosa on Camino Island in Florida. He makes his real money, though, as a prominent dealer in rare books. Very few people know that he occasionally dabbles in the black market of stolen books and manuscripts. But eventually Mercer learns far too much, and there’s trouble in paradise as only John Grisham can deliver it." -Goodreads Click on the image to the left for access to the audiobook. Lesson of the Month

Another quick, yet fun, lesson we've done recently centered around Banned Books. Students were assigned a book to read that had been regularly "challenged" and we found articles that presented both sides of the issue: To ban or not to ban? We gave students a Works Cited sheet and they were tasked with locating the sources and downloading them to a Google folder. The topic sparked a great conversation with the students! Click on the image to the left for access to the American Library Association's Banned Books webpage. Click on the button below to see our Works Cited list of articles on both sides of the topic.

"In 1986, a shy and intelligent twenty-year-old named Christopher Knight left his home in Massachusetts, drove to Maine, and disappeared into the forest. He would not have a conversation with another human being until nearly three decades later, when he was arrested for stealing food. Living in a tent even through brutal winters, he had survived by his wits and courage, developing ingenious ways to store edibles and water, and to avoid freezing to death. He broke into nearby cottages for food, clothing, reading material, and other provisions, taking only what he needed but terrifying a community never able to solve the mysterious burglaries. Based on extensive interviews with Knight himself, this is a vividly detailed account of his secluded life--why did he leave? what did he learn?--as well as the challenges he has faced since returning to the world. It is a gripping story of survival that asks fundamental questions about solitude, community, and what makes a good life, and a deeply moving portrait of a man who was determined to live his own way, and succeeded."

"In The Power of Different, psychiatrist and bestselling author Gail Saltz examines the latest scientific discoveries, profiles famous geniuses who have been diagnosed with all manner of brain “problems”―including learning disabilities, ADD, anxiety, Depression, Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and Autism―and tells the stories of lay individuals to demonstrate how specific deficits in certain areas of the brain are directly associated with the potential for great talent. Saltz shows how the very conditions that cause people to experience difficulty at school, in social situations, at home, or at work, are inextricably bound to creative, disciplinary, artistic, empathetic, and cognitive abilities. In this pioneering work, readers will find engaging scientific research and stories from historical geniuses and everyday individuals who have not only made the most of their conditions, but who have flourished because of them."
