These transitions include divorce, a serious medical issue and the death of a spouse or partner, among others. Elderly widows, in particular, have a higher likelihood of facing poverty as they struggle with grief. "A lot of times the surviving spouses, especially widows, are surprised at how much debt they have," said Rick Staszak, an adviser with Financial Network Investment Corp., an ING company in Green Tree.
