We're ditching cash. So how do we teach kids

about money?

By Brett Molina

USA Today Money

"According to a 2016 Pew Research Center study, 24% of Americans indicated they don’t make purchases using cash during a typical week. And that's made teaching children about the value of money, from how to count and pay with it, to how to save it, a particularly 21st century challenge. “We’re vastly approaching that real time where’s there no cash,” said Neale Godfrey, of the Children's Financial Network, a company she founded in 1989 to help teach kids and parents about money. “Our kids will look back on bills and coins as relics." Thinking Slow When Life's Changing Fast: Financial Planning in Times of Transition

By: Mike O'Donnell & Ryan O'Donnell

"When life changes fast, we are often required to make decisions that will impact our financial lives for years to come, as well as the financial lives of generations to follow. Yet, as human beings, we are emotionally affected by the instability of transitions in ways that undermine our decision-making capacity. And worst of all, we are often unaware that our judgment is impaired, “blind to our blindness,” as Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman puts it. This book draws on the latest research by Kahneman and others to help you shed light on your own decision-making processes and how to make smarter choices during just those times when it is most difficult to think clearly." Learning to Survive: Losing a spouse can leave many women financially vulnerable

By  Tim Grant

"Losing a spouse brings with it a host of issues, not the least of which is how the surviving spouse will support himself or herself financially. Elderly widows, in particular, have a higher likelihood of facing poverty as they struggle with grief. "A lot of times the surviving spouses, especially widows, are surprised at how much debt they have," said Rick Staszak, an adviser with Financial Network Investment Corp., an ING company in Green Tree. "Once their spouse dies, they are not only forced to manage everyday finances and figure out their investments, but also have to take on massive amounts of debt that was accumulated over the years."
