This Month's Happenings

“Sniffer”, our member at large, has been out and about re visiting MoMa in New York now the weather is more favorable.  The Pollack exhibition which just finished was inspiring with 50 of his works covering the short but art world revolutionary life.  Clearly Pollack once he settled on the east coast had an attraction to MoMa constantly visiting for inspiration which is then reflected in his early work.  Much of the works he studied are in still on show in the permanent collection especially Picasso, Miro and Native American artists.  Pollack most remembered for his innovative experimentation was represented in the exhibit with his iconic One: Number 31 1950 (1950). A tumultuous work the pinnacle of his “pour and drip style”.  This style was first seen at the long gone days of the New York “salons”.  It impacted the way artists thought about expression moving away from depicting nature even in an abstract surrealism form to adopting “automatism” which allowed feeling and serendipity of the moment take its place. Much of Pollack’s work remains on show in the permanent collection. Well worth a visit.  And don’t miss the newly opened Degas exhibit which begs the question “did Degas debase women” with his subjects and depiction.  A debate that shows the world goes round as we approach the November elections.
