All Quarter 2 grades are now finalized* and there is only one more obstacle until Christmas Break--EXAMS!

For English, my students will be writing a comparison essay between Homer's Odyssey that we read over November-December and the 2003 film Big Fish. Students have completed a comparison chart in preparation for this essay which we will go over and discuss tomorrow.

The essay itself is five pages (for five paragraphs) of fill-in-the-blank boxes. Each sentence block has a corrolating specific direction of what to write. Students simply need to follow those directions, write the sentences in the blocks, and turn in the five pages of writing!

If students would like guidance outside the classroom, they can check this Compare and Contrast PowerPoint (with examples from Disney's Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief), this college handbook on how to write a good essay, this WikiHow (with pictures!),  another version of an essay outline, and this page of definitions and purposes of a comparison essay. Otherwise, tomorrow we will focus on excellent thesis statements and getting started. From there, students will be able to ask any additional questions during the exam period!

Students have the full exam period to complete the comparison essay.

Students have also had the opportunity to bring the exam home to work on. If students complete the essay before the day of their exam, they may turn it in to me and receive a note to excuse them from the exam period.

*Note: If students have zeroes in for a grade that they "know they turned in," please have them check the "nameless" board in the back of the classroom before winter break.
