Supervisor's Corner

Welcome to the start of the Summer Season and to our Summer 2018 electonic newsletter. Be sure to visit the Town of Wheatland's website, accessible any time and from any where, using your computers, tablets and smartphones. Our website also supports those with special needs.

As you walk and drive around our town enjoying the sights and sound of a new season, you may notice a new vehicle bearing the name of the “Town of Wheatland”. Our very first senior van, a 2005 vehicle, finally arrived at the day when the cost of repairs was not worth the expense. This vehicle has been replaced with a new 2016 version of the same vehicle. Thanks to a significant grant from Monroe County Office of the Aging and monies from the Town's contingency fund, we were able to purchase this vehicle on state bid without incurring any debt. Thanks also to the efforts of Chuck Hazelton, Highway Superintendent, and Michelle Adair, Wheatland Senior Coordinator, who both enabled the transition to occur with minimal disruption to the transportation of participants to programs and events. The Town Board and I always appreciate the cooperation of the County and the dedication of our quality staff. A very special “shout out” also goes to the dedicated volunteer drivers. This small group of men are truly unsung heroes to our Seniors and our Town Government, thank you to them! Wishing all a wonderful summer!

                                                                     - Linda Dobson, Town Supervisor

Get to Know Your Town Government

Howard "Chuck" Hazelton - Highway Superintendent

As your Highway Superintendent for twenty-three years, I am responsible for all Town roads in our community as well as assisting the County and State on maintenance and improvements when requested. These three government entities encompass almost 74 miles of road within our boundaries. At times we may also called upon to assist the Village with its approximate five miles of road. I manage a crew of 7 full time and 3 part-time personnel. All full-time employees are heavy equipment operators with CDL licenses.

These employees have varying skills that create a diverse group to maintain our Town infrastructure including highways, buildings, parks, and special districts. I am called out at any time of day or night to deal with issues such as downed trees, dead deer blocking roadways, the need for roads to be secured for fire or accident related issues, and complaints from residents pertaining high grasses along our roadways. I have extensive experience in highway maintenance and work diligently to respond to our resident concerns. I work in cooperation with the County, State, and Town Board to anticipate areas of concern in a proactive manner.

In my leisure time my wife and I own an alpaca farm in the Town. We show our animals at various events and nursing homes around the County. Our two children are grown with both having degrees in education. The five grandchildren provide us with immense joy and laughter.

Welcome to the Highway & Parks Department!

The mission of the Town of Wheatland Highway and Parks Department is to efficiently and effectively manage the care and maintenance of the Town's road infrastructure, parks and properties providing for safe and convenient usage by residents and all others. In order to accomplish this mission, the department operates and maintains a fleet of vehicles, including trucks and a variety of heavy construction equipment. The Highway & Parks Department provides four types of major services for the community:

  • Highway maintenance and improvement
  • Snow and ice control
  • Town cleanup services
  • Property care and maintenance.

You can contact the Town Highway & Parks Department by phone at (585) 889-1553, option 5 or send an email.
