CHALK ART IS BACK!

The Arts Foundation is hosting its annual Chalk Art Contest.  This free event is part of the City's Spring Celebration, scheduled for Saturday, March 24, from 10am to 2pm.  The Spring Celebration is at Community Park II (where the Fourth of July festivities are now held), and we will be where we were last year--in the parking lot of Donaldson Way Elementary School.

Children 11 and under are welcomed to participate.  They will be able to decorate an Easter Egg with chalk and be judged on their work.  First, Second and Third place prizes will be given to children in three age brackets:  4-6; 7-9; and 10-11.  Children 3 & under paint for fun!

2018 ART EXTRAVAGANZA

Our Call For Art is ready for downloading, and entries are already starting to pour in.

As noted in our last Informer, the show will be held at our newest Premier Sponsor, SpringHill Suites Resorts at the Napa County Airport.  It will run April 27-29, 2018. The artist reception, including silent auction, will be on the last day, or Sunday, April 29.

For ACAF members, the first entry will be $20; other entries will only be $10 each.  Non-members will pay $20 for all entries.  If you want to join the Foundation, for $45 you will get a year's membership plus one entry.  All subsequent entries will by $10 each.

As we did last year, entries will be electronically submitted.  Our judges will decide which art will be included based on that digital review, but the actual ranking of art, including who is first, second and third, will be done in person.

The deadline to enter is Friday, March 30.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION

IN AMERICAN CANYYON

As part of our Arts & Culture program, we hosted an evening to celebrate Black History Month.  The event was held at the City's Senior Center on Saturday, February 24.  We had over 60 people attend.  There were two speakers:  Pam Jones, who talked about Jacob Larwence, a black artist who used murals to convey Black History in America; and Sharon McGriff-Payne (pictured above) who talked about African American history in Vallejo and the North Bay.  Music was provided by The Has-Beens and Bow Hammer Skins.  And what was intended to be "light refreshments" turned into a complete dinner, thanks to Chez Soul of Fairfield (and donated desserts from Pam Jones and new Vice-President, Patricia Oro).

This program is funded in part by grants from the City of American Canyon and the Arts Council Napa Valley.  The goal is to highlight the art, culture and food of the many ethnic groups that live here in American Canyon.

Valentines Craft Event

Working with the Chamber's Welcome Center staff, the Arts Foundation provided a free crafts day to let children make custom Valentine's Day cards for their parents.  We had See's Candy on hand for sale, in case a beautiful card wasn't enough!  Thank you to all the ACAF members that helped out on February 10.
